Talk to me about sleep wedges

DD has reflux and currently sleeps in her car seat. She was a tummy sleeper, but we didn't want to take the risk, so our pedi recommended it. She will sleep on her back for about 30 minutes and then gets very fussy and starts spitting up. My plan was to keep her in her car seat till she was rolling both ways and then let her tummy sleep again. But, I've been noticing that it's been taking her a long time to get comfy in her car seat, so I wanted to try to find an alternative since she can only roll one way. We let her nap propped in her boppy, but I don't feel comfortable doing that without supervision. We've tried lowering part of her crib, but she wasn't angled enough.

Has anyone had good experience with the sleep wedges? Are they safe? Any other sleep ideas from reflux moms?

Re: Talk to me about sleep wedges

  • I'm pretty sure the sleep wedges and any sort of sleep positioner are a big no no. There was recently a story on our news here in Indiana about how they are unsafe and actually I dont think they make too many of them anymore. We've never had reflux problems so I have no idea what its like or anything, but just thought id fill ya in on what id heard at least :) Goodluck!

  • As per pedi's recommendation, when we were regulating DS's reflux meds we elevated one end of his PNP mattress by putting a rolled up blanket underneath. It worked pretty well. Once we switched him to his crib, though, we stopped elevating and he's doing well now (he's on 2.5 mL of Prilosec 2x/day, and that has made the biggest difference).

    This.

    Here's an article on it:

DD's on 1mL twice a day and it helped at first, but she's been spitting up like a madwoman lately. Maybe she needs her meds uped cause she was about 4lbs smaller when she got her prescription.  I'll talk to her pedi.

    Thanks!

  • My dS was a reflux baby and we did the same thing for his first month-he slept in the carseat because that was the only place he would not scream in. We tried a wedge pillow (which I would personally use if it worked, imo because if it helps control your baby's reflux during the night, it's worth the 1 in a million chance that they somehow suffocate with it) but it didnt work. We also tried rolling up blankets under the crib and bassinet, didnt work either. We ended up buying the fisher price rock n play sleeper. It was the best investment ever, and he slept 6 hours straight the first night we put him in it. It's the best investment for reflux. He slept in it until he was 5.5 months old. I know your DD is already 3+ months old, but if you plan on having another LO I'd definitely buy the rock n play.

  • We have this wedge

     https://www.amazon.com/Dexbaby-Safe-Universal-Wedge-White/dp/B00067AUP2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1306163689&sr=8-1

Goes under the crib sheet and fits the width of the crib. It keeps DS at a slight incline though he usually wiggles his way off of it during the night.

  • They do sell sleep wedges at BabyRUs and I use one for my DS for a couple months now.  They work great and no they aren't dangerous.  It's not a big wedge, but just enough to help the reflux stop while he is sleeping.  He used to have very bad episodes where he would throw up a whole bunch and choke while he slept, but since we got him the wedge he hasn't really had any episodes while he is sleeping.  Our Pedi recommended it too.

Definitely talk to your pedi. DS started off with a smaller dose, but when I noticed his symptoms were coming back we weighed him and told the pedi his new weight. Turns out his dosage was way too low. GL!
