milk protein sensitivity...how soon did you know?

DD #1 has a milk protein sensitivity.  We didn't know until trying to switch to cow's milk.  The only thing we can figure out...is she was a preemie and on neosure for the 1st year of life.  We are guessing the protein in the formula was broken down enough, she could handle it.

DD#2, 9 months,...we have tried yo baby yogurt and string cheese.  both seem to be making her sick.  Very fussy and inconsolable.  She was BF until about 6 months, and now on Enfamil Infant.  Pedi keeps saying if it was a true protein sensitivity, she wouldn't be able to tolerate the formula?  I am again thinking the protein in the formula is broken down enough she can tolerate it.

I just can't figure it out.  I know a handful of kids who had to be on nutramagein as infants, but did fine on cows milk.  We seem to be the opposite.

  • When ds was a baby (he had both milk/soy allergy) it was within 2 weeks. We then switched him to the Similac Soy which he did fine with until about 3-4 months where he then started having projectile vomiting, mucousy diarrhea and screaming in pain after eating. Then he was switched to the Alimentum until 14 months where we then started to wean to milk to see if he could tolerate it. He did fine but was losing weight/going down in percentages so it was back on to toddler formula + carnation instant breakfast + milk.

  • Ds had a horrible rash basically by day 5 (he was in the nicu for 9days) and a nurse asked me if I liked milk. I had NO idea at the time what she meant, but after his rash never went away for weeks, I finally eliminated dairy and it went away. It was probably at 3 months that I was sure it was dairy (despite two drs telling me it was a yeast/bacteria or other issue).

  • We found out at three months.  She was always fussy and looked like a tomato all of the time.  She was so red.  I was BFing her, so when I cut out dairy, things changed for the better in about 2 weeks.

Could it be a protein intolerance rather than an allergy?

  • By the time DS was about 3 weeks old, I had switched to FF because he screamed so much while BFing, and within a couple of weeks we had to switch to Nutramigen. By 3 1/2 months he was on EleCare.
  • Jack had a terrible-looking rash all in his diaper area at around 2ish weeks old, and it wouldn't clear up.  I thought he was having allergic reactions to the diapers and kept trying different brands, to no avail.  Finally, a nurse at the ped's office suggested cutting out dairy from my diet to see if it made a difference, which it did.  Then, I noticed that if I did have anything with dairy, he would have terribly mucousy, green poop.  We kept him off dairy until he was about 18 mo old.  When we introduced solids I inadvertently gave him a Beech Nut dinner that had heavy cream as one of the ingredients.  Since the jar was labeled "ham, pineapple and rice" I didn't even read the label to make sure it was milk-free.  He was sick for a week after, and I learned my lesson big time.  He is now 2 and has no issues with milk anymore.

  • My DD was pretty fussy from the beginning and then we switched to Enfamil at 3 weeks (long story about failed BFing) and it got worse. We switched to Gentlease at about 5 weeks and it got a little better, but then we found mucus and blood in her diaper and it didn't go away. We switched to Nutramigen and she improved significantly and no more mucus or blood. She transitioned to cow's milk fine at 1 year.

  • DD was diagnosed with a milk protein intolerance at 4 days old. She had Similac Advance for the first 4 days of her life, and we couldn't figure out why her diaper area was soooo bright red. Pediatrician recognized it right away, and we tried soy for a while before going to Alimentum. Once on Alimentum all of her symptoms (gassy, mucus in stools, diaper rash, cradle cap, screaming) ended.

  • We went through trial and error at 2 months. The problem with many pedis is that they have so many hyper-sensitive parents who come into their office every day and many new moms coming in and swearing their kids have an allergy which causes them to be ultra conservative ... in my experience. So our pedi didn't believe me when I said that I thought there was an allergy.

After DS constantly crying (when he had shown no signs of colic prior) and seemingly being in pain - combined with thick eczema patches - I just went to the store picked up the nutramagin and tried it.

Within two days, he was no longer crying and was back to being a happy go lucky baby. Over the course of the following 2 weeks his thick elephant skin like patches disappeared (when no cream or other treatment helped - it had gotten to the point that they were breaking open and bleeding - we had to wrap his little arms and chest with gauze).

So for us - we knew it was definitely something with cow's milk/protein. At around 1 year - we started with some yogurt. No reaction. Then cheese. No reaction. So we slowly transitioned him off of the nutramigen over to whole milk.

He was later tested and confirmed with reaction to sesame, peanut and mold but milk seems fine now.

  • by day 12 we were at childrens hospital and LO was diagnosed with AR and Milk Protien Allergy... he cried non stop for 12 hours straight the day we ended up in the ER. Worst day of my life...once we cut dairy and got his AR under control he was much better.
