Exposed to strep

So we had friends stay over with their 5 year old. They left yesterday because they thought the 5 year olds allergies were kicking up. Turns out he has strep. He definitely touched the baby and loved on him. I'm going to call the pedi but anyone know the odds of him catching it? He is almost 7 weeks old. I feel like a total idiot for letting this happen and while I know kids get sick I am feeling incredibly guilty!

I know it's next to impossible, but try not to worry (or feel guilty - you couldn't have known).  It is VERY rare for babies and toddlers to get strep.  I thought DD1 had been exposed when she was 6 mos old and the pedi told us kids really don't get it until they are school-aged.

  • How timely! I actually have strep right now, and I just started antibiotics yesterday. I breastfeed my 4wo, so I was worried about him getting it, too. My pediatrician said that for one thing, bf-ing is a good thing, because the antibodies in breast milk will protect him from infection. Another thing is that babies' tonsils are too small, so the likelihood of him getting actual strep throat is very low. My son and husband just got over pink eye (yes, my house is a sick nest), and my lo didn't catch that, either - I don't know if it was because of bf-ing, or not. Bottom line is, wash your hands a lot, and if you bf, keep doing it!

  • When DS was 4 weeks, he was near his cousin who came down with strep the next day. I called the doctor and the nurse said it is very rare for a child under 2 to get strep. They told me to watch to be sure he did not get a fever. He was fine.
