Full sized bed for toddler?

HI ladies, I have a convertible crib that has been switched into a day bed for my son. He is not interested in the bed, and rarely sleeps in it. My husband thought it may be time for a bigger bed for him. The crib switches to a full sized bed. Is this too big for a toddler? Do you all think it would be better to buy a twin sized bed? Thanks!

Re: Full sized bed for toddler?

  • DD is in the convertible toddler bed now, but we will be switching her to a full size bed this summer so we can use the crib for #2. I don't think it is too big. I will be getting bed rails to go on the side so that she can't roll out easy.

I have considered this for DS as well because he is all over the bed when he's trying to get to sleep at night and I think more space will make it less likely for him to fall out of bed (though he'll have rails anyway). The only reason I am ruling out a full bed is that of the two beds we have stored in our basement, the twin is in better condition than the full.
  • At 18 months DS went to the crib mattress on the floor than we got him a twin bed at 2, he sleeps great in it, and feels like a big boy.

ETA: It's next to the wall and has a rail on the other side.

  • We just converted DD's toddler bed to the full size and she loves it and does sleep better.  She never fell out of her toddler bed (I took the rail off a while ago), so this is just pushed against the wall on one side and we have a pool noodle under the open edge (under the sheet) - it's enough to keep her from accidentally rolling too far.  The bed's not far from the ground anyway (we aren't using the boxspring).
  • We still co-sleep with DS but are moving in about 5 weeks and will transition him into his own bed at that time. We are upgrading to a king and he'll get our queen (the bed he's known his whole life). We are just putting it on a low frame close to the ground, and depending on how the room is situated either one side against a wall with one rail, or 2 rails. He is very comfortable in there and flops around a lot in his sleep so the bigger bed is perfect for him.
  • We converted DS's bed from toddler to full-size when he was 2 1/2 and he did just great. No rails or anything. I was pleasantly surprised at how well he did.

  • We went from crib to full mattress on the floor at 22 months.  About a year later we put the box spring under the mattress.  That's all we'll do for awhile because she gets up at night to rearrange her stuffed animals and sometimes even go to the bathroom (woohoo!).  I imagine we'll make it onto the frame around fourish.

  • my DD went straight to a double bed and we just got a new bed for her (Queen) since we had to remove all trace of our cat from her room.  we figure she should be able to use this forever!  i grew up in a queen sized bed too.
  • Thanks ladies!
