1st Trimester

Allergies :(

I am suffering so badly from allergies in the past week.  I am sneezing and coughing and just feeling icky.  I read online about Zyrtec and it only has a B rating.  I am not comfortable taking medications as this is my first pregnancy and I am kind of nervous about everything!  What can I do to find some relief??  Any suggestions???

TIA

Re: Allergies :(

  • Here's a list of approved medication from my Doctor's website:

    Common Cold and Head Congestion

    • Tylenol (regular or extra strength)
    • Sudafed Decongestant
    • Sinutab (regular strength)
    • Actifed (regular strength)
    • Coricidin HBP
    • Chlortrimeton
    • Tylenol Allergy Sinus
    • Benadryl
    • Saline Nasal Spray
    • Vicks VapoRub
    • Zyrtec
    • Tylenol Sinus Nite-time
    • Tylenol Sinus Nighttime
    • Claritin, Claritin-D

I'm nervous to take anything before 12 weeks, but if you are miserable, you've at least gotta get some sleep.

    Hope this helps!

  • This is really great!  Thank you so much :)
  • I had the same question for my OB last week. She wrote me a generic prescription for Chlortrimeton. Even though it's technically OTC, if it's filled by the pharmacy, it gets rung up as a prescription, which means that if you have a flex-spending health account, you can use it - you can't if you buy it yourself. You may also want to try Tylenol - at times, allergies are made worse by inflammation, and sometimes that can help.

  • I am too and my pharmasist told me to suffer and wouldn't let me buy the Zyrtec my suggested. He said it was just too dangerous for the first trimester and to suffer through it :(

  • I would check with your OB before you take anything.  I am kind of shocked to see Sudafed on that list a PP had from their doc.  My doc said no way on Sudafed during pregnancy and no on Zyrtec during the 1st trimester since Zyrtec hasn't been out that long and the 1st trimester is when all of the major organs form in our baby's body.  Bottom line is your doc has your charts and knows the details of your baby - we don't and neither do our docs.  Ask your doc for their advice before taking meds for your allergies or anything.  Especially during your 1st trimester.  GL and hope you feel better soon!
