avoiding non-stick cookware?

Is anyone avoiding using non-stick pots and pans?  I read to avoid scratched or chipped ones. I have some traditional pots, but when I need a large pot, all we have are non-stick, and even though none of them are in awful condition, none are in mint condition either.

Re: avoiding non-stick cookware?

  • Hmm, I've not heard that one. But, all we have is stainless steel cookware, so it doesn't affect us.

  • I asked my doctor about this.  She said something about how pregnancy manuals want us to go back to being cave people and that everyone has non-stick cookware and there's no reason to buy anything new.

I mainly use stainless steel cookware and use non-stick only for things like cooking eggs. The non-stick pans I use are in good condition. I replace them every couple of years or earlier if they start to chip.

None of those things are specific to pregnancy for me, though. I'm just a little wary of the chemicals in non-stick pans generally, just not so wary that want my eggs to stick :)

  • I think you'll be ok as long as your pans aren't chipping away. Mine are still fairly new and then I also use Stainless steel so I haven't been too concerned about it

  • Uh, no.  I'm pregnant, not paranoid.  I swear, some of these posts get more ridiculous everyday.  Just use common sense and avoid the things you are supposed to like alcohol, tobacco, drugs, other well-known dangerous foods and we will all be fine.

yeah, this.  I didn't even know non-stick cookware was on any list of things to avoid while pregnant.  I know in general you're supposed to replace when the finish gets damaged/chipped/etc, but nothing specific to pregnancy.

You're pregnant AND insulting, congratulations!  There are plenty of sources that talk about avoiding PFOAs, which are used in the making of non-stick cookware.  I'm not making it up; it's not "ridiculous."  You can say YOU think it is ridiculous to avoid non-stick cookware, but there is no need to call my post ridiculous.

ETA: Do what you think is safe, but I just follow what the FDA says, otherwise I'd drive myself insane and feel the need to live in a bubble.  I just try to use my common sense and avoid the things I know are dangerous.

  • That was quite informative; thank you for posting.

Ain't that the truth!  With all the "don't do this" and "don't eat/drink that," what can I do/eat/drink?  I was healthy before I got pregnant, I'm healthy now, and I want to do what is best for my baby, but I'm not gong to completely change my entire lifestyle.  Sorry, getting frustrated by all the "don'ts" of pregnancy.

I'm not meaning to be insulting.  You are not supposed to use them when they are damaged whether you are pregnant or not, you are correct about that.  But it sounded like you wanted to avoid them just because you are pregnant.  There are so many conflicting studies about almost everything out there.  I just stick to what the FDA says.

  • I have always heard not to use it (not just during pregnancy), so we have all stainless steel.  It had something to do with the chemicals in it, I believe.

I actually worked a kitchen consultant for years.. non-stick cookware is a SURE FIRE WAY TO GET CANCER!!!!!

Seriously - stay away!!!!! You can't just "not scratch" it. The surface wears away everytime something touches it.

If you want the HEALTHIEST cookware that's affordable - by Cutco cookware (www.cutco.com). I don't sell it anymore but is made in America and has a stainless outer layer so it's SAY and an aluminum core so it cooks things evenly without "hot spots"

  • lol. no. Better avoid restaurants then too.
  • Better yet, go live in a bubble for 9 months.  Don't leave the house, don't come in contact with anyone, don't breathe the air, eat only organic, and OMG don't drink the tap water....Sleep
