It always makes me chuckle this time of year because on TV I hear "prom" yet in my area everyone calls it "the prom"
When I hear "I'm going to prom" it just sounds so strange to me, like the sentence needs a the in there.
so what's it called near you?

Re: my annual question- do you call it "prom" or "the prom"
I say the prom.
For example: Jordan is going to the prom with her boyfriend, Jeff in a couple of weeks. (true story)
I'm going to prom with Brad. No the needed
But you are right, doesn't seem right
ditto.

I'm laughing because this question used to come up in my job every year. Our main yearly event never had a "the" used with it. Because it was an event like Christmas, Passover, Prom. But only if it was capitalized.
Smaller, non titled, events got "the" thrown in. "The basketball game." "I'm going to walk around the mall."
Where I grew up we said it both ways.

Just "prom" here.
Prom(enade) is both a noun and a verb, so either is correct...technically.
