swim lessons

I have DS and I signed up for mommy & me swim lessons but I am starting to get nervous about it. It's only for 30 minutes but keeping DS's attention on anything for 30 minutes straight is almost impossible.

If you did them at 16 months, how did your LO do?

Loooved it!!!  Does he like baths?  My kids could spend an hour in the bathtub, easily.

  • I haven't started mommy and me this season yet.  However, we went last year and go swimming together a lot.  She loves the water and can spend well over 30 minutes in the pool.  If your LO likes the water then I would not be too concerned.  The instructors keep the songs and activities going because they know they are dealing with LOs.

I started them right after DD turned a year old & we've done them since.  I think he will be fine.  You won't be doing the same thing for 30 minutes straight.  The only thing that will be the same is that you will be in the water.  Don't expect your DS to love them every time either.  DD cried through a few and loved others when we 1st started.  It was very important to me that she learns basic swim skills since we have a pool in our backyard.  Now you can't keep her out of water of any kind!

  • I did it with both my kids.  They both did not like it.  Ours was more a mommy fitness class with baby swim and songs and swimming for babies mixed in.  Of the 8 or so kids in each class, my kids where the only ones who didn't like it.  All the other babies loved it.  They also did not like baths.
  • We started them around a year.  Both kids love them!  If you have a good teacher they'll have a bunch of different things to do as well as toys to play with (balls, watering cans, etc).

If it seems like your LO isn't into the structure, just do your own thing in the pool.  It's not that strict at all; at least the two different places we've been.  Ultimately the goal is to get the kid comfortable in the pool, so they should work with you on that.

  • Ok, we did Mommy and Me swim lessons at a much older age (DS was pushing the age limit at nearly 3) but the structure of the class was simple.  Pretty much, the instructor would go around to each pair and work on a specific exercise for a minute with you.  Then he'd leave and go to the next pair.  Then you were pretty much free to practice the exercise on your own, or do whatever else you wanted (because yes, kids can't focus that long!) We'd do maybe 3-4 different exercises.  I believe our classes were 30-40 minutes (don't remember).  Honestly, it is more about them having fun and getting used to the water.  Oh, and don't worry - there were exercises my kid just flat out wouldn't do, and that was ok.

  • regarding the bath....he used to love it (we had to drag him out) but now it's a total scream fest with him clinging to me and trying to climb out of the tub. That's one thing that has me worried. This only started about a week ago though.

He was in the pool quite a bit last summer but I highly doubt he remembers it Wink Guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes!
