Pregnant after a Loss

Constipation

Sad Sorry for the gross topic.  But I am so bloated.  I seriously look 6 months pregnant.  People are just automatically congratulating me when they see me, and I am only twelve weeks.  I have only been going to the bathroom about two days out of the week.  Did anybody have this problem and did you find any tricks to help?  I have been eating fruit, drinking lots of water.  I don't want to take any medicine.  I don't even know if anything is safe.

Re: Constipation

  • I'm sorry - that sucks.

You can take Metamucil or Colace as a fibre supplement to help.

  • Lots of water and grape juice helped me.

Try not to strain when you go to the bathroom- you do NOT want a bunch of hemmies. Those suck big time.

I think a little light exercise might help too? I don't know but I'm crossing my fingers I won't get that this time around. It's no fun!

  • Grapes are good at getting things moving.  I have used that trick several times when on constipating medicines.  Also, Benefiber or Colace would be good, just make sure to increase your water even more.

  • Watermelon.
  • I take a probiotic daily. It really helps keep things moving and is approved by my midwife. I specifically use jar-dopholis, because it doesn't have to be refrigerated. But any would probably work.

  • I completely understand!  Have you tried prune juice?  My doctor said Miralax was also safe.

  • Yogurt helps regulate your system if eaten regularly.  Also, my I-phone app told me that Kiwi is a natural laxative.  I just bought kiwi today so can't tell you if it works yet, but figure it can't hurt.

  • A combination of fiber (from fruits) and LOTS of water helped me a lot.  I eat at least one apple a day or other fruits.  I hope you find something that works for you.  GL

  • I think if you're miserable you should ask your doctor if they are ok with miralax. It isn't absorbed so it should be safe. You probably need a med to get things going again.

For maintenance, I'm trying to get fiber in whenever I can. My blood counts looked ok, so I also will take adult gummies without iron for a few days instead of my prenatal to give myself a break when things get backed up.

    GL! Constipation is no fun!

  • Ask your doctor, but there are some safe over the counter things you can take. I had horrible constipation in first tri, and being on progesterone didn't help. It went away as soon as I was off the progesterone thankfully. Papaya is a great natural laxative. Drink tons of water, and walking also helps. Feel better!

  • Flax is also a natural laxative... you can add flax seed when you are baking, to cereal or to fruit. Maybe even in yogurt.

  • Thanks everyone.  I will give some of these tips a try.  Hopefully it will be better before I ask my doc.  My appt is a week and a half away.

  • Penny, I feel your pain! Dr C is okay with Miralax and I also take fiber gummies at night. Occasionally I will splurge and mix the Miralax in one cup of coffee and that usually helps. I lived on Miralax with C!
