Pregnant after a Loss

Question from a TTCAL-er...

Hi Ladies!

Just a quick question for you...

Do any of you know of a protein powder that is safe during pregnancy?  Powder specifically, not the pre-made shakes.

I make a smoothie with strawberries, blueberries, banana, fruit juice, vanilla almond milk and raw spinach (it's really good!). My husband has a delicious vanilla protein powder that he drinks and I used to add a scoop to my smoothie which was SO good, but it's one of those weight lifter kind that has chemicals not safe for someone TTC or pregnant so I can't use it anymore.

Thanks!

I don't know of any, but if it's the vanilla that you want why not just add some extract?

It's more the benefit of the protein as well as the taste and texture that I'm after.  The almond milk already has the vanilla flavor and sometimes I add vanilla yogurt, but there's just something about adding the protein powder that I really like.  Plus it's a great way to get more protein.

  • You could probably buy straight whey or soy protein and add that. As long as it doesn't have the other chemicals in it you're probably fine.

  • I would go to a health food store and see if they sell a whey powder without all of the extra added chemicals.

If not, another way to add flavour and extra protein is by adding soy milk (the So Good in Vanilla would be a good option).

  • I use whey protein (from Shop Rite/ Hannaford).  It doesn't have any chemicals in it.  I've also seen it in the organic supermarket I go to.  I am a vegetarian and put it in milk if I have a day where I don't eat much protein.

Could you give me the exact name?  Thanks so much :-)  I'm in NY too so I have access to Shop Rite.

  • during my first pregnancy i used to get a protein powder fron walmart that just had protein and other nutrients - no weight lifting stuff. oh and no fat. Let me see if I can find it online.

I had showed it to my doctor at the time and she said it was fine. I would check wtih your doctor first though.

Hi there!  Try going to a health grocery store like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or others like that.  Also, when I was TTCL I read online that muscle building shakes aren't good for sperm count, so look into that as well as Folic Acid for him, some posts say it helps with production of sperm, of course, this all depends on how much of a "rush" you are to conceive.  Good luck!
