So, is he smart?

This is what another parent asked me today. Granted their child is in middle school (I think a child's intelligence is a little easier to judge at that point) and I'm sure they just weren't really thinking but I really didn't know what to say. The sarcastic side of me wanted to say his IQ is off the charts The other, more polite, side of me is thinking he is meeting his developmental milestones so I guess so?? Oh how I hope I never turn into one of those parents/people who don't think about words before they come out of my mouth!
