I took my twins at 3.5 yo.  It was a free exam (went to my reg eye dr) from a program called See to Learn I think.  Their vision was fine.

They are going to kindergarten this year and I took them again.  They both got reading glasses.  They like wearing them and it's only for writing/reading/working up close.

  • My oldest has never had an eye exam outside of the one that the pedi does for him at his annual visits.

My youngest had his first optho exam at age 2 when referred by his pedi due to seeing an asymetrical red reflex during his annual exam.

My oldest will get eye exams every year in school and with his pedi.  Unless there's a problem I suspect he won't see an eye doctor until he's an adult.

I always thought that the pedi was there to give you the basic exam and refer you on if there's an issue?

Does your pedi not look at his eyes during his annual exams?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • DS had a few when he was under a year because there was a chance he had inherited some eye issues that I ahve (he is fine). Other than that, his pedi gave him basic vision tests at his 3 and 4 year well visits.

  • DD#1 just had one at her preschool.  They brought someone in and checked all the kids.  Super cool!

I had an eye exam done in November, and I asked at the end when the dr would recommend having DS' first exam done.  He popped him up on the exam chair and gave him an exam right then and there...for free.  It was great!  But to answer the question you asked, he said that he usually recommends before they start school...around age 4-5.

  • DD went in November and has been wearing glasses ever since.  She's nearsighted.  We noticed that sometimes she was crossing her eyes and blinking hard, so we took her to the pedi and he referred us to a pedi eye doc.
