  • great for a dog...not so much for a person.  Can you imagine job interviews?  I'm all about unusual names, my sister is September...

  • As the wife of a Naval Aviator I would recommend against it.  The "Top Gun" references will be endless.

  • I would steer clear of Maverick because of the political overtones from the last presidential election.

I like it but I could not get away with naming my child that.  Im not cool enoughBig Smile Just give him a 'safe ' MN like John or James for him to fall back on .
  • Maverick sounds like you're trying too hard.

It's like the male equivalent of Amunique.

  • I think of the basketball team.

  • My husband loved this name, but it was an immediate veto from me. Not a fan.

  • I voted for "It's ok". I like it in theory, I'm just not sure about an actual child. But I really do like it.

  • I instantly think of Top Gun and then I wold think you were trying to be funny by naming your LO after a character in an 80's movie.

What about Dominic? Similar sound without being a noun/adjective, a Top Gun reference, or reminiscient of Sarah Palin.

... yeah, not good associations in my mind ? at all.

Great name for a malamute / husky, though!

This exactly, right down to the dog suggestion.

  • It's my dog's name, and it fits him very well.  So, if you're planning on having a 100-pound shepherd/rottweiler mix, go for it.

I voted "it's ok". I'm actually surprised that I don't mind it that much. I think it would only work for certain families though, like if the kid will be growing up in the rodeo circuit or if he'll grow up on a ranch that he will for sure inherit (which is pretty common in my area lol). Otherwise, it would be cheesy.

He could go by Rick later on if he didn't want to use Maverick professionally.

I agree with all of this. I also immediately thought of a rancher.

  • Great for a pet or a sports team, not for a person though
  • I like this name, and I like what it means. SO and I were thinking about it for a boy, but we were met with a lot of negative criticism from the world at large. We prob wouldn't have gone through with it for a number of reasons, but I still think this name is awesome in a guilty pleasure kind of way.
  • I actually know a little boy (age 4) named Maverick.  I really, really, don't like the name, but it seems to fit him.  That said, however, his Mom is ALWAYS being asked how she came up with it.  And yes, he is named after Top Gun.

Funny thing is, that his little sister is named Lucy.  Such a cute, common name.
