s/o Extreme Couponing

You know what I've realized? Maybe they're not showing it all, but these people buy absolute crap food. You don't really find coupons for meat or fresh fruits/veggies, but you do find them for junk food, prepackaged meals, and sodium loaded microwave fare. Is that all these people eat?

Don't get me wrong, I like the occasional ramen as much as the next person, but I also would rather save money by going to a pick your own veggie place for fresh produce than clip 100 coupons for croutons.

Re: s/o Extreme Couponing

  • That would be so disgusting. Are all the people on the show obese? (I don't know since we don't have cable where we live)

And yeah, I enjoy junk food, too, to an extent. But am making a concerted effort to eat better.

I wish they did have coupons for fresh food!! That would probably help with some of Americans' eating problems.

I agree! I'd be all over coupons for fresh produce!

  • I agree!

This is sort-of off topic, but last week on a rather windy day I saw some plastic Wal-Mart bags stuck in some shrubs in my backyard. I went out to pick them up and throw them away and I found a long receipt in one of the bags...

I guess I shouldn't be so nosy, but the majority of the food on the receipt was twinkies, frozen pizzas, corndogs, soda, bacon, and basically a ton of junkfood. I thought who the heck in my neighborhood is eating all this crap?!?

THEN, I noticed that the $200 worth of crap had been paid for in almost $150 in food-stamps! I was like, wtf? You can buy twinkies with food-stamps? That's ridiculous.

That is disgusting and really sad. I know its not the exact same, but that's why I like the WIC system better than food stamps. WIC sends you checks for very nutritionally specific things like fruits/veggies, whole wheat bread, milk, juice with no added sugar, etc. so you can't just buy crap.

  • I use coupons for only those things that we use and in amounts that do not reach hoarding status.  I also will not buy cheap cuts of meat or "imatation" diary products.  That is not to say that I don't like some junk- but only in moderation.

Plus I have read many articles that the show potentially involves the participants using coupons fraudulently.

  • To me what they are doing is a big waste of time, really how many things of mustard an cereal do you really need. Dhs cousin is all into couponing she would brag how she would buy a lot of food and not spend much money so I was intrigued and went over to see how she does it. Yup a bunch of crap she would buy and stock up on, not nearly like the show but she had a good amount and a lot of junk food. She would spend close to 6 hrs on subday clipping and do 3+ hr shopping trips then spend the rest of the week looking for deals and coupons. She has 2 boys and wants more I personally think she could save money and feed her family better if she didn't worry about all the crap coupon stuff she gets and spend more quality time with her family. Sorry this turned more into a vent, don't get me wrong I don't mind using coupons and I like junk food as much as the other person but I think sometimes people go crazy and a little over board. I also dont like the people that wipe the shelves clean because it's a good deal.

  • ITA.

The only place I understand couponing is at the drugstore.  I have a friend who is an *extreme* couponer & loads up on personal care items for next to nothing at CVS.  They hate her.  But she stocks things and donates the excess to charity.  I guess if that makes her happy, then so be it.  I, for one, think it's a waste of time.  I can only eat so many chicken nuggets and fruit snacks.

  • I was thinking about that, too- you always see people with 100 bottles of ketchup and more toilet paper than you could possibly store.  I need to get better about couponing, but I certainly don't want to get to that level!

As far as fresh fruits and veggies go, we've been going to a weekend farmer's market.  Everything's so much cheaper (and better!) and the grocery store.  There's even a cheese vendor that has the same cheese as Publix for much less, sometimes half off.

So our tax $$ paid for their twinkies & they couldn't even be bothered to throw the bag away? (or better- reuse it?!) ungrateful bastards. (just kidding about the bastard part- picture sarcarsm as you read that.)

Why be sarcastic?  I'm sure there is some bastard-dom involved there.  And some serious douchebaggery.

yeah I hate to judge people about this sorta thing because I know there are tons of people who use food stamps responsibly.. but when I cashiered I swear I saw food stamps used to buy pop and junk food 100x more often than anything else.  it blows my mind that food stamps can even count toward pop.  one time a guy and his wife bought a cart FULL of pop with food stamps.  it took soo much willpower for me to not make a comment.  just ridiculous.

I have watched the show and it lite a fire in me to save money, NOT to hoard! I think it is CRAZY what these people do.. I did buy a notebook and now  organize my coupons so I can get a quicker trip to the grocery store(with 3 kiddos it's a must) and since I am out of work for so long, I don't want to waste my DH hard earned money, so a couple of hours a week is the least I could do to provide savings for my family.  I NEVER and will never get products that couldn't be used or donated.  Our stores double coupons, this week they are tripling and a few weeks ago it was SUPER double, which meant they would double up 1.98!  I am getting yogurt for cheap for my family and deodorant for .50 for 5. Those crackerfuls(YUMMY) were on sale for 2.99, had a 1.50 coupon they doubled, so it was free! I also hate processed food for my kids, so I am finding applesauce, baked products for snacks and canned & frozen veggies for my go to at dinner time if I don't have fresh.

My aunt is a hoarder and I knew I could never do that, but I have always been frugal when it comes to shopping.   I couldn't see how and 800 shopping trip down to 8 bucks, I cannot see it.  But when I spend 110 and get it to 75, I will take itWink Matching sales with coupons.

What store is that?!?! Our Kroger begrudgingly doubles coupons and carefully reads the fine print of every single one to make sure they have to take it. Its lame. I wanna come live near your store!!

  • ITA about couponing for foods but i still coupon for house/personal stuff.  like, i use coupons for laundry detergent, dish soap, antiperspirant, shampoo, etc.  i dont stock up like those crazies on the show though.  they're kind of intense.

I was so excited yesterday at the grocery store when I saw that the two bottles of wine I was buying had coupons!  1 was $2 off of chicken and the other was $2 off of ham and I had already planned on buying both.  They need to have more coupons for fresh meat and produce!

  • I didn't read through all the responses so this might have already been answered, but some of the extreme couponing people (and I would know - I've watched every episode Stick out tongue) buy something and actually get money back (like the woman that made 50 cents from every bag of cat treats she bought even though she didn't own a cat) and used the overage to buy things like meat and produce.

  • ITA!  All they buy is junk and no one needs that much junk.  They are definitely hoarders in disguise
