Food Allergy

Intro...

Hi I'm Emily, my home board is the Sept 2010 board.  I have an 8.5 month old DS.  He hasn't formally been diagnosed with an allergy yet, his pedi thinks it is an intolerance to rice.  Here is the story: The first time we thought something was up was when he had Baby Mum-Mums...he loved them and did great, but then about 1.5 hours later he vomitted about 10 times in 30 mins ( we ended up taking him to the ER, where we waited for 2 hours during that time he slept and woke up feeling better, nursed and didn't vomit after the waking up). Both the ER and Pedi said it was possible but could have been a bug to.  About 6 weeks later I fed a puree of squash, apples, and mixed grains (which included rice flour) same story vomitted about 5 times slept and woke up his normal self.  Talked to the pedi again who now thinks it is an intolerance and that we should avoid rice flour until he is a 1.

I'm now a little scared to try other foods.  He does great with oatmeal and fruits and veggie purees.  I haven't tried much in the ways of table food and things like puffs are out because the rice flour.  I'm not sure how to proceed with feedings and advancing...I don't want to make my baby sick. Any advice would be great.

  • I'm sorry; that is tough! We discovered that Will was allergic to wheat and corn and at one point he seemed to be reacting to rice, too. Makes it tough, especially when you're trying to find easy finger foods! Since rice and oats were our two safe grains I'm not sure about rice-free products. What did your dr say about trying wheat? That would give you some more options. I think in terms of finger foods, you could maybe try some fruit and veggie dices ... yogurt melts were great for Will but I'm not sure if they contain rice-based anything. (I don't think so, but double-check.) We also found a wheat- and corn-free version of Cheerios that my boys did well with.
