Possible peanut allergy...

As per our pediatric nutritionists recommendation (because of my worry of possible allergies), to introduce peanuts to Natalie I smeared a bit on the side of her mouth.  Well......she broke out in hives within seconds.

What is my next step?   We have an appointment with her neonatalist (she spent time in NICU) in a week and a half.    Should I ask him for a referral to an allergy specialist?    What kind of testing do they do on 2 year olds?

    My son was recently diagnosed with a peanut allergy, and he is 2.  The first allergist did a scratch test, and our second one did the blood test.  If his number had come back as questionable, the second allergist was thinking of doing a food challenge.  Good luck!

    If you can get a referral to a pedi allergist, take it and run with it! From what I understand they are very hard to come by before 3. But it definitely sounds like a food allergy and he should be seen.

    Sorry you're dealing with this! I'd look at the Kids with Food Allergies or Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network websites; they both have helpful info for dealing with peanut allergies. I'd definitely ask for a referral to an allergist, or even call one (if your insurance doesn't require a referral) and set up an appointment now.

    The testing they do at that age varies. Will had allergy tests done as young as 9 months because he seemed to be reacting to SO many different foods as we introduced solids. Some allergists won't test until age 2 or 3. I'm not sure if that's different if a toddler has had a clear reaction to a food though. Hopefully you'll get an epipen prescription so you can have that on hand just in case. Good luck and keep us posted when you find out more!
