September 2011 Moms

Screw you, maternity dresses! I didn't want to wear you anyway.

I tried on at least 10.. maybe more like 15 maternity dresses today. Each one was too short.

I know I"m on the taller side (just shy of 5'10"), but seriously! I wound up finding a skirt. I guess I'll be wearing a lot of skirts instead of the summery dresses like I'd thought. Oh well.

What I find odd is I still have at least 2 pre-pregnancy dresses which fit me and are long enough. Yet, no luck with maternity versions. Maybe I'll have to look at certain kinds of regular dresses to find more that fit.

Big picture, I know it's not a big deal, but it was super frustrating.

I tr to avoid maternity anything as its generally over priced.. I scored two nice dresses from ross and I think one was 12 another was 15? .. Id look for anything empire waisted.. that includes shirts I have a lot of regular shirts that work they only cause problems in third try where even some maternity shirts were getting too short..

  • I was surprised by how short all the maternity dresses are, too!  I'm a few inches shorter than you and have still had that problem.  I hope you can find some that fit!

  • All the dresses I have bought have been non-maternity. Just bigger in size, mostly strechy, and a lot more flowy. I bought several at NY & Co and Ross that are cute. I have noticed some of the maternity wear can be made in some really cheap material too, like very itchy and uncomfortable.

  • I've pretty much resigned myself to going nekkid until September. I can't find shirts to save my life. It's driving me batty

do you have a platos closet in canada? Or anythig similar.. its a resale shop I got most of my shirts there last time since they have a whole section on "babydoll/empire" type shirts.. or just look online under those terms should get good results. They're usually longer too.. they were really popular a year or so ago.. whenever anyone pregnant or not would wear them all I thought was that they were pregnant.. glad they've died down actually..

I've never seen plato's closet. I need to check some consignment shops and stuff like that. We went to Value Village yesterday, and they had zero maternity clothes. Which I find really weird. We're going to look around twon next weekend again. I'm hoping I have more luck. I'm running out of baggy t-shirts.

I don't feel like shelling out tons of money on maternity wear, so I'm just going to sew a bunch of dresses and tunic-y tops for the summer. Too expensive by far, and I don't think any of it fits well.

  • I feel the same way!!!  I'm about 5'9" and I tried on a bunch of dresses from Motherhood Maternity, all too short!
I had luck with Old Navy dresses though!!!
  • Maybe get a cheap cotton maxi dress and then hem it to where you want it to be?
  • I'm 5'10" and found a couple dresses at Old Navy and a couple at Kohls that hit me at the knee, so plenty long for me!

  • I have just been buying stretchy maxi dresses - non maternity.

    Good luck!

  • I so feel your pain!  I bought two adorable dresses from Motherhood awhile back to wear to a wedding this past weekend (my brother-in-law, so we had to attend the rehearsal dinner as well as the wedding itself) and they both ended up being almost indecently short (although thankfully not unless I bent).  I told my husband that he would have to pick up anything I drop on the floor because I couldn't bend over without flashing everyone!

I got another MM dress from a yard sale and it is even shorter--no way I could wear it without leggings underneath.  Grumble.

I've had much better luck with Old Navy and since maxi dresses are really "in" right now there are a lot of longer choices for us taller gals.  I also like the ON knit skirts with fold over panel--they go from work tot he weekend and have plenty of length for this 5'10" girl and are SUPER comfy for summer.
