Not interested in table food?

Z is almost 1 and doesn't want to eat table food. Unless it's crunchy ie: puffs, veggie stix from TJ's, cherrios, kix, etc. He will eat French fries and sometimes peices of pancake. Is this normal? Should I still start him on cows milk? His 1 year appointment isn't or another 3 weeks so I have a while before I can ask his pedi.

G is 20 months old and still nurses more than she eats food.  She asks for stuff but has little interest in eating it :|  I wouldn't cry if she decided to eat more, lol.

    I'm voting for normal.

  • Sounds normal. DS goes through phases where he only wants to eat crunchy things then it's only soft things. Toddlers are weird. You can start him on cow's milk if you want to but there's no rush.
  • My instincts told me not to worry. But then I go over to the age boards and everyone talks about how much food their kid eats and it makes me wonder. Hard not to compare. The only reason I'm even wanting him to eat more is because he's on formula (wasn't able to breastfeed :( ) and that stuff is $$! I've been super hesitant to give him cows milk cause DH is lactose intolerant.

Some people have the theory that kids who have late interest in food are actually following some kind of biological instinct to avoid foods that would be allergens.  If that makes you feel better.

If you're nursing, there's no need to hurry into cow's milk.  DD wouldn't have it at all until recently--now she loves it all of a sudden.  But she always loved cheese, sour cream, yogurt, etc.  If you're formula feeding, you probably want to save some money already!

LLL has a nice way of thinking about solid food: it's our responsibility as parents to offer healthy choices; it's our children's prerogative to pick and choose among them.  I wouldn't rush it, in other words, if you want your child to have a healthy relationship to eating (not too much, the right stuff).  You might try a few more things that you think your LO will like, but don't kill yourself about it.  Lots of kids wait to seriously eat solids.  It's fine.

  • I think a lot of kids have tendencies to crave carbs.  I know DS does.  I'd probably try and see if you can push more fruits and veggies as you're FF - I don't know all of this for a fact, but I feel like breast milk continues to change and offer something a tad more specialized than formula does and I'd want to try and get LO to get a good variety of nutrients.  Maybe try mixing in some veggies in pancakes or try baked sweet potato fries or healthier breads (if he does breads - DS can't get enough...).  I found that once we started hiding veggies in things that DS would eat, he started to develop more of a taste for them and then we could serve them by themselves and he was much more open to them.
