Wheezing....

Just a quick question regarding wheezing.

I'm actually on a flight right now to Vegas and Joe is home with all of the kids. I noticed this morning, when I woke Abby up that she had slight wheezing.

I heard it last night, but didn't think much of it.

She is congested and has been for about 2 weeks now - gotta love daycare! Anyway, is wheezing enought to take her in for a pedi visit?

She doesn't have any other symptoms. Could possibly allergies be causing this or even asthama? Just curious what you think.

I'm not sure what it might be...  we didn't have allergies until DS's 2nd spring.

Regardless, I don't think it warrants a trip to the pedi unless it persists or she's having trouble breathing.  I'd run the humidifier for naps and bedtime just to help her out.

  • I actually just dealt with this yesterday.  The sitter called me to tell me that Maddie was running a low grade fever (100).  I took her to the pedi to be on the safe side because she had been coughing and I was occasionally able to hear/feel a little rattling around in her lungs, basically wheezing.  The pedi listened to her lungs and agreed that she was wheezing.  They ended up giving her a breathing treatment to see if whatever was in there would loosen up and it worked.  Now I have to use an inhaler type thing with her every 4-6 hours for 24-48 hours, or until the cough goes away/dramatically reduces.

  • I guess it depends on how bad it is.  A mild case of RSV will clear up on its own but if you noticed it yesterday and it seems worse today, I'd probably take her in just to see what's going on.  Lila had a fever and wheezing last week that I tried to let her ride out, but it kept getting worse so I took her in and her chest x-ray also showed a few spots of pneumonia that she needed antibiotics for, so I'm glad I took her in just to be on the safe side.

  • IMO I wouldn't mess around with wheezing.  One of our guys was wheezing and when we took him to the pedi and his O2 stats were 87%.  He had to have 2 breathing treatments in the office before it went up to 92%.  That was enough to win us a nebulizer, a diagnosis of RSV, and a follow up pedi appointment.  We were lucky and didn't have to spend any time in the hospital.  If she is still wheezing I would call the after hours line and see what they have to say.

  • I agree with the pp.  Don't wait with wheezing.  My DS turned green and puked, then turned a wonderful shade of purple in the pedi's office, while getting a nebulizer treatment.  We ended up at Children's ER immediately, and his oxygen level was a very scary 76%.  I thought he was going to end up on a ventilator.  He didn't.  They nebulized steroids and more albuterol, and managed to get his asthma in check.  If you suspect foul, get it checked out, especially when an airway is involved.  I am so sorry you have to worry about that while you are out of town.  I know you have a super capable DH, and all will be fine.  I just can't tell you to wait with an airway issue.  And I am queen of not calling our pedi unless I think I have NO other option.
