Food Allergy

do you think this is a food allergy thing? (eta: PIP)

a few weeks ago, ethan (16 mo) woke up from his a.m. nap with hives on his thighs and butt. nothing like this had ever happened. the only new food he had that day was a raspberry cream cheese on his toast. called the pedi, he recommended zyrtek before bringing him in. the zyrtek worked within 15 min. the next 3 days he had mild breakouts that seemed to go lower and lower on his legs.

obviously, haven't tried the raspberry again and no reoccurance of hives. when he goes in for his 18 mo ckup do you think we'll be referred to an allergist/do testing or will we just have to avoid raspberry food products? or, from your experience, does the hives reaction sound food allergy related at all?

From my own experience, not DS', I would say that could very well be a food reaction.  I can get hives and red swollen patches as well.

Allergy testing can be very invasive, depending on the situation.  Since you will have your 18 month soon, I would bring this pic and consult your doctor.  If you aren't seeing any other possible sensitivities, my instinct would be to challenge raspberry, or the exact same product, and see if it reacts the same way.  I would also be ready to take him right to the pedi or hospital in case it is a worse reaction.  A single challenge would be less invasive then full allergy/blood testing, especially when the blood testing isn't always accurate.  Again, though, I would do it with the oversight of your pedi, not the crazy internet lady!

  • Many times a reaction occurs *after* the second exposure.  Just something to think about as it may be another food....
  • It is great that you have a picture.  I'd definitely bring it up to the pediatrican.  Rashes were a definitely symptoms for my DDs.

  • I think it looks food allergy related.  Like pp's said, great that you have a picture to show your md, keep a food diary  and don't rule out anything just because it hasn't caused a reaction before.

I didn't suffer severe food allergies until adulthood.

  • Also, write down the detergents, softeners, soaps you use on him.  Most likely, there are only from about 3 or 4 manufactures.  Call them and ask if they have changed their formula recently.
  • cotner - good point. and i recognize that avatar very well ... i don't live far from lawrence but I did go to ksu (so don't hate me).

thanks to everyone else ... i hadn't thought about the 2nd exposure issue either.

lovin' this board and between the 2 kids we don't have serious allergy issues BUT it's great to be able to discuss it with others who do.

  • DS had this same thing last week.  When he would get just a little bit warm (after nap or benig in the car seat) he would get hives on his butt, feet, and legs.  They didn't seem to bother him.  We hadn't changes soap or detergent and he isn't on food yet.  Called the pedi and they said there is a virus going around that can cause hives--on and off--for 7-14 days.  Sure enough, after day 7 things are back to normal.  Just a thought!

  • That rash looks a lot like my skin reactions.  Hives don't always look like raised wheals--sometimes it can be red, patchy or swollen skin.

Mine are exacerbated by exercise or heat--if I eat something I am allergic to and then move around it's 10x worse.
