NBR: self-cleaning oven

So I'm cleaning our oven for the first time since we moved in...a little less than 2 years ago... probably flameful I know.. It's a self-cleaning oven, something I've never had before.  I googled how to use it since I have no clue.  It said just set it to "clean oven" mode for the recommended amount of time, let it cool, and wipe down any ashes with a paper towel (with a little soap and water if necessary).  It's on right now, and it stinks!!! I have all the windows and sliding glass door open to air out the kitchen a little.  Is it supposed to stink like this?? I don't see smoke... yet. LOL

    Yes, ours stinks when we clean it too. It has to get really hot to burn off all the food and turn it into ash. Greatest invention ever though - its really easy to just wipe it down afterwards!

    Yes, it's supposed to smell that bad.  I did this earlier in my pregnancy and was worried about the "fumes"  but there's nothing harmful to you or baby it's just burning anything in there at a high temp.

    yep. I remember it used to stink when my Mom would do hers. You know what? I've never done ours either and it's been a year! The thought never even crossed my mind.

    Yes, it stinks. That's why it's best to do it on a day when you can air the house out. MH and I learned this the hard way when we tried to run our oven's self-cleaner in the middle of winter. It was made even worse by the fact that he forgot to remove his cast iron skillet from inside before he started it up! We had to stop it before it was finished and leave the house for a little while because the fumes got too bad for me. The skillet survived though!

    Yes, it def smells bad.  The first time I did ours, I stopped it after just a little while and called my mom because I thought something was wrong!  LOL!  I had no idea!
