NSAHR: If you have your hair colored at the salon...

If you have your hair colored at the salon (specifically, foiled), how long does it typically take, and how long/thick is your hair?

I had mine done yesterday, and my appointment was at 11:45. I didn't get done until 4:15.  Granted, I have thick hair, and she did a double process (color, shampoo, blow dry, full foil, shampoo, blow dry). I'm just curious to see how that stacks up to other people's experiences.

Also, I have to go back tomorrow to have it fixed because it's too warm. My husband thinks it's going to take another 4.5 hours... I hope not!

  • That sounds long, but considering she colored your hair twice, maybe not that bad.  I've had hair appts (for full highlights) go 3+ hours.  I have thick hair, but its very fine and straight.  I was not happy it took that long but also felt I processed for a very long time.

Did she dye it and then go back and do the highlights on top of the dye?  When I've had that done, they foil just the areas to highlight and "paint" on the dye everywhere else.  I've had it done that way at more than one salon.

  • Hairstylist here chiming in.  It's not good for your hair to do all over color, wash dry, then highlight.  It's very damaging.  Find a stylist who puts the highlights in, then puts the all over color around it.  Your hair will thank you.  Also, your time will thank you since it will cut your appointment at least in half.

I still take care of a few former clients and it takes me 2.5 hours tops, and that is for very thick hair, for a full foil, all over color, cut and blow dry.

I should clarify -- it wasn't an all-over color and then a foil. She did something she called "base breaking." She did the regrowth (there was a good inch or more) first so that it was the same level as my ends (my natural level is about a 7 and my ends were a 4 or 5). Then shampooed. Then she went back and did a full foil. I was going from red to blonde, which I know is quite a feat.

My hair is in great condition, although I'm hoping it stays that way after we "fix" it tomorrow! ;-)

  • It takes about three hours for her to do mine - That's if I'm going dark with low lights or blonde with all over highlights / brown in between, etc.  Always. three. hours.

  • Good Lord that's a long time!  My hair hangs right above my shoulders and is fine, but I have a lot of it.  I get my hair highlighted/cut twice a year and it usually only takes an hour. Sometimes 1.5hrs.

I typically have highlites/lowlites, then shampoo, dry and style...it will take almost 2 hours if it's a full.  If it's half then it's hour and a half.

To be totally honest, I just go by what my stylist recommends...she is younger than me but I have known her forever (she's good friends with my best friend's sister) and I really kind of let myself be her open canvas to play with.  As long as my hair doesn't come out pink or blue, I'm pretty open to what she wants to do.

This is what my stylist does when she wants to take me darker (in the winter months).

  • I go every 10 weeks for color, foil highlights, cut, blowdry style,  and it takes 2.5 hours.

  • I used to do highlights and lowlights and it always took 3-5 hours.... and very very expensive. Now I went back to my natural brown color without bangs so i barely need any hair appts. Just for the cut and its fast. But I figured that with baby at home its crazy to spend so much time and money on hair.

I get blonde highlights every couple of months and it takes a long time.  My hairdresser runs a shop out of her home and she is pretty slow.  It takes maybe 2-2.5 hours.  I get the cap though, not the foil, but I have had the foil several times in the past and it took about the same amount of time, maybe a little longer.  I've gone to other hairdressers and they were a lot faster.  I stick with mine though, because the price is very reasonable.  (I only pay $38 for highlights and a trim!)

She also dries and straightens my hair and I have long hair so that adds to the time too.

  • I'm usually there for 3 hours. I do a single process, highlights, gloss and haircut.......
