Food Allergy

i am terrified to introduce peanuts

LO has milk allergy issues, that we are slowly dealing with.  He had a small reaction to pesto sauce b/c it had tree nuts in it.  it was a skin reaction, but still it was scary.

And I am terrified to introduce peanuts.  I don't know when I should, I don't know how and I don't know how to deal with it if he does have a problem.

I feel like there is so much differing info on the topic that is there is no way to know what is the right way.

does anyone have any advice? or words of wisdom?

Re: i am terrified to introduce peanuts

  • I would have him tested for allergies first.  We did the blood test that red flagged a bunch of stuff and then the skin test to confirm/see what was the same.  There is no way I would give my kids peanuts if they reacted to tree nuts without having an allergist making the suggestions and doing the testing.  You need a plan!  Otherwise, definitely not until he is old enough to tell you if his throat is closing or something.  2+.  And even at that, Benadryl on hand.

  • Don't rush into it! I had a nut allergy when I was small, so our pedi recommended waiting until after 2 for DD to try nuts. I don't think she had peanut butter until closer to 2.5 and I did very small amounts at a time. I know the thought of giving a pb&j sandwich is fun (or at least it was for me) but no one says you need to do it right away. Take your time and do what feels right for your family. GL!

  • P.s. Sunbutter, sunbutter, sunbutter.  Cookies, sandwiches, etc.  I don't care for the Sunbutter brand, but some of the other brands are really good.

I wouldn't either without checking with your doctor first.

  • Because LO reacted to the pesto, I would have him tested at the allergist before introducing it!

  • Thank you for all your advice.  LO's 12 month appointment is coming up in June, so I will talk to the pedi about getting him tested before introducing any peanuts.

    Thanks!

  • I would stay away from it.  Even the first reaction can be very severe. With already exhisting food allergies I wouldn't mess with it.

  • FWIW - Our allergist highly recommends waiting until 3 to introduce any "common allergens" even in kids who have never had a reaction.  While I thought that was a bit extreme when I was going through it with my girls, who have never had a reaction.  We're sticking with that or at least 2 with DS with everything since he has reacted to food allergies.
