Mini Crib?

I was just wondering if anyone has used a mini crib for their LO instead of a standard size?

When DS#2 is born, he will sleep in our room for the first few months, but eventually will be moved into DS#1's room.  The room is on the smaller size, and we would like to save some space in there.  The mini cribs we're looking at (here and here) convert to a twin size, and a toddler bed.  DS (and most babies I know) was climbing out of his crib by 18 months, and moved into a toddler bed around then.  I anticipate moving DS#2 into DS#1's toddler bed then, and moving DS#1 into the twin bed.

Does that sound reasonable, or am I crazy for thinking that the mini crib would work for that long?

Re: Mini Crib?

  • That seems like a smart plan.  If we had restricted space then I would do probably the same thing. We bought a convertible crib that goes from crib, toddler bed with rail, toddler daybed, and then a twin.

  • DS started off in a mini crib in our bedroom (now he is in a standard crib in his own room). But I think it would work until he was able to transition to the toddler bed. The only problem I had with the mini crib was the mattress didn't seem comfortable. It is thin and flimsy looking. I never looked for a better mattress since DS was going to end up in his own crib after a few weeks anyways. But maybe if you search you can find a more comfortable mini crib mattress. I found that once DS was transitioned to his room he started sleeping better. Not sure if it was just a coincidence or if it was the mattress that made the difference.

  • We have one and I think it'll last until 18 months....it's the same exact size as a pack and play. I purchased a mattress from amazon.com and am happy with it so far (DS is still really young though).

  • Thanks for the responses.... glad to hear it's worked for more people.  :)

And thank you to PP for the link to the mattress... we definitely plan to get another mattress, because the ones we're looking at only come with a 1" pad.

  • No not crazy.  I have the Davinci mini crib you listed in the firstr link.  We are at 13 months and should last at least to 16 months and DS is very high in height percentiles.  I think the crib would last and average child to 18 months (35 inches) which is the recommended height for transitioning to a bed.  As for the mattress, I would highly recommend the colgate one listed by PP.  I have the Davinci coil mattress and wish I had the Colgate.  They used the colgates at DS's day care and the seem a lot easier to change and maneuver.

As for sheets, which are the tricky part of mini cribs, i highly recommend the carters portable crib sheets.  They have elastic all around, are made of cotton jersey
