how would you handle this?...re: clinginess and eating

For the past 3 nights, DD has refused to eat dinner unless on my lap.  She's done this on and off in the past too.  She starts out fine in her chair (she's in a booster chair now, b/c she was doing this same thing a while back in her high chair, the booster helped make everything better for a while), and then as soon as I sit down she cries and reaches for me until I pick her up and then she picks at my food (which is usually the same thing she has) or wants me to spoon feed her.

Some factors that may play into this are....it's usually just DD and I in the evening (DH works until after she's in bed).  On the days that he is home with her, he says she eats in her high chair just fine.  She also eats just fine at our in home day care  lady's house, also in a high chair.  Her molars are coming in, so she may be in some pain when eating.

How would you handle this......I've just been letting her eat in my lap and hoping this phase will pass soon, but I don't want to create a bad habit either.  Advice? TIA!

  • I'd also probably just let LO eat on my lap, if you think it's the molars.  Hopefully it will pass, if not, I'd try slowly getting her used to sitting in the booster again.  Maybe a fun food distraction that you do not have so she'll want to be in her spot, not yours?

  • I wouldn't allow it.  I would ask that she stay in her chair and eat and if she doesn't want to, end the meal for her (so just take her plate).  Any time DD gets wonky with her meal she still stays in her seat at the table until the rest of us are finished eating.  I get that it's just the two of you but I also get that you are the only one she's doing this with.

  • Liam gets really clingy when he teeths. I would just let him sit in my lap if that is what he wanted.

  • Could you try feeding her from your plate but while she's in her chair. My son definitely has moments when he has to have the food from our plate (even though it's the same) so I often don't give him his own portion I just plan on feeding him from my plate. Maybe that would work for you?
