Anyone teach online college classes?

My background is accounting - I have a Bach in accounting, am 1 class shy of an MBA with an accounting concentration, and I am half way through the CPA exam.  I was putting off my last MBA class to finish my CPA (seemed more important) but an interesting opportunity has come my way.

A very good friend of mine just started teaching a couple of online classes through Argosy University.  Her dad is some big shot over there, and her step mother teaches accounting classes for them as well.  She swears she can get me through the application process quickly and I can get a job teaching... as soon as I finish my Masters.  Classes are 8 weeks long, done entirely online, and pay 1800 a class.

I'm considering bumping up the MBA class (fortunately it is also an 8 week class and done remotely, though through a real brick-and-morter school) and maybe postponing taking a CPA exam section in order to take advantage of this possible opportunity.  I wouldn't start until after this baby is finally born and I things calm down a bit, obviously, but I think I could start the class a couple months after the baby.

Has anyone taught online classes?  The money is decent for what I presume to be not too much work, and I could make my own hours with it.  It seems like a great opportunity, and keeps my head in the game, and could maybe even turn into some other part time at home work (tutoring/taxes/etc).  Thoughts?

Re: Anyone teach online college classes?

  • I have friends who do this, though for brick and mortar universities, they actually go in and teach in most case.  I looked into it, but could not make the economics work with 2 kids.  I have an MBA and 12 years of corporate experience and an undergrad in Human Resources which included a lot of training related classes.  I may do it in the future, when the kids are in school full time.

My friends who do it complain a lot about the lack of ethics, mostly plagiarism.   Also about the lack of dedication of the students.

This.  I am in the same situation that you are in- I am just short of my master's degree and am considering teaching online classes when I finish. I have friends who do it, and they have complained about the same thing.
