Toddlers: 24 Months+

Is she trying to give up her naps?

My DD sleeps from about 9pm till 7 or 8am and then takes a 2-hour nap. But for the past couple of weeks, it's been near impossible to put her down for her nap. She stalls for anywhere up to an hour at a time, talking, asking to go potty, singing to herself, etc. I'm honestly hoping she's not giving up her naps yet, because I've really gotten so used to them and it's a nice downtime, besides she's a bear on the days she doesn't nap.

I feel like Super Nanny would have a blast at my house; I remember an episode where a toddler wasn't going down for his nap and the mom kept going in and pleading with him to nap. Super Nanny basically told her if he wasn't asleep within an hour, nap time was over, and the mom was arguing that he really needs to sleep and how she wasn't going to get him from his room until he's napped (as long as it would take). Sigh, I might have to try that myself.

So does it sound like DD is giving up her naps or is it just a phase which will be over soon?

Re: Is she trying to give up her naps?

  • Maybe some days - but I doubt she's done w/ them forever.

I have a sort of Supernanny approach - if DD isn't asleep and/or happy after 30ish minutes, naps over.  She normally goes down 30-60 minutes earlier on those days.

I basically just don't plan my days around her naps anymore - I try, but eh, if I need to do soemthing, I do it.

  • Thank you for your response. I am going to try to do that, it's just getting a little ridiculous with this stalling.
  • The other option is that she may be exerting control. I had this issue with DD so I started putting a small stack of books on the end of her bed told her the choice was here she may nap or read her books but she must stay in bed until I opened he door, sure she still got up a couple times but it greatly reduced the amount of time and now many times she still falls asleep cause she is laying there reading

  • We do watch some Dora/other TV in lieu of the nap. Its not quite a "break" for me, but its quiet.

  • Owen was doing this thing where he would talk and yell and play with stuff in his crib for over an hour.  It was working out okay, but when he finally fell asleep it was too late for him to take a good nap.  Then it was 50/50 if he was going to fall asleep and THEN it was DD's nap time too and he kept her awake so we stopped naps a few months ago.  It was crappy for me for a million obvious reasons, but he sleeps from 7:30-7:30 and then plays in his crib until after 8.  He doesn't seem overly tired in the afternoons so it works out I guess.   Good luck.

  • Regardless of whether she naps or not, DD has quiet time for at least an hour. Most of the time she'll end up napping - then she's down for around 2 to 2 1/2 hours (total, including her goofing around and being awake).
