Babies: 9 - 12 Months

So flippin pissed. I just need to vent..

So I got offered a job at AmFam and they told me that I have TWO things on my credit. TWO. I have never had a credit card or a bill in my name other than my cell phone which is still on so I obviously pay my bill! Turns out a friend of the family I used to live with when I was 11-12 and 16-17 got some bills and stuff in my name. I found out she had one in Atlanga GA (where I have never been) that I confronted her about and she paid it... now I'm finding out there are more.. I am so pissed and if I don't get this taken care of I won't be able to work there... (I was just told I need to file a police report by the company). I'm so glad I called before I gave my 2 weeks notice.. I know what I'll be spending my lunch doing.. Calling collection agencies to figure out the jist of this crap... GGGRRR I'm so mad!

  • That's really sad that someone would do that.

But why do they look at your credit?

  • Can you explain the situation to them & show them any proof that it wasn't your fault?

Lots of places look at your credit as a part of the hiring process these days. It's to see how 'trustworthy' you are, I guess. Especially if you're going to work for a financial institution.

Monique, good luck with all of that. I hope you can get it taken care of quickly. Not sure how well you know this person, but obviously they don't care how it has affected you....so don't be afraid to press charges!

That's awful you are going through that!  I'm confused how come a prospective employer has to know about your personal finances though...

    They do?!  wtf?

Your paying of bills =/= your ethics or morals.

    OP, what a sucky situation.

  • it's american family insurance..

I called both institutions and one said it shouldn't be on there and she removed it and requested the credit bureaus remove it as well. She is also sending me proof by mail. The other one has record of me speaking with them in 2009 (i was confused cause they said it was from 2008 when the actual fraud happened in 2005 when I was 17 and I thought I had gotten it taken care of) and I filed a police report on the person and sent them a letter stating that fact that apparently got lost in the mail. So this time after I go BACK to the police to get the report number I am requesting proof from them that they received the information and that it will be taken care of.. I'm sending them this

My name is Summer Moni?Que *** (DOB ) and on May 20, 2011 I contacted your business (Business Name) and spoke to a representative by the name of Reese. I was informed that if I sent in a letter regarding the fact that my SSN and personal information was used to create fraudulent accounts with Name and Name Power in 2005 when I was 17 years old that this would be removed from my credit. I filed a police report in 2009 when I was first informed of this matter. I also sent a letter at that time, but it seems that letter was not received by your company. Here is the police report number ____________________. I would like to receive a confirmation of this being taken care of as this is hindering me getting a job. Please send it to this address as soon as possible.

    ....

This place is in a town not too far so I am actually thinking of DRIVING there and giving it to them...

Yep, they do. You do have to give them authorization to do so, they can't just do it behind your back. But yes, more and more places are requiring it. I think they are more looking for fraud, and not so much if you pay your bills late. But still...

  • That sucks. My best friend had that happen to her only it was her own estranged sister who stole her identity and racked up a ton of money in credit card debt. It's taken her a while to get it cleared up and I remember what a hassle it was for her. Hope you get it all taken care of. GL!

  • Wow, that is awful! I used to work in collections so I know what a strenuous process it can be to correct an error on your credit report.

The thing that shocked me the most about your post though is that you have no credit! Not bad shocked...just amazed to meet someone who has no student loans in their name:)

I'm only 23 and I went to college for all of 1 semester before I got KTFU with my son at 19 and I haven't been back. Embarrassed YET. It was only 1200 for that semester and I had it paid before I started... Get back to me in a few years and I'm sure I'll have student loans up the ying-yang.

  • Normal to check your credit when you're working with money/finance, and yes - they have to do it with your permission.  I'm actually surprised that people DON'T know this.  It's very common.  I did the cash accounting for a big retail store like 8 years ago.  They had to check my credit.  It wasn't perfect, but it was decent.  I was handling as much as $50,000 in cash some days.  I'm sure they don't want someone who would possibly steal from them.

  • Oh, and Summer - I had no idea you were so young! lol.  I hope you get it taken care of.  That really sucks.  And really, in these times, you are GOOD to not have any cards or debt or anything.

I have a family member who is very well qualified who has bad credit because of paying bills late and a large number of loans, and has been turned down for multiple jobs that she was otherwise very well qualified for. Definitely another reason to pay bills on time.
