Are these good activities for a 3 y/o birthday party?

We are doing an Olivia theme for DD.

I thought we'd start with decorating foam tiaras for the girls, neck ties for the boys.  Then do an Olivia floor puzzle I bought online, then do snacks and cupcakes.  We are saying "no gifts" so I don't need to allow time for that.  Is this enough?  Suggestions?  Thoughts?

Re: Are these good activities for a 3 y/o birthday party?

  • My experience with at home birthday parties up to the age of 4 or 5 is that less is more.   They seem to have a LOT of fun just having a giant play date.

I think it's great that you've got things planned but don't be surprised if you have a bit of a rough time keeping everyone on task.

I definitely don't think you need to plan anything else!

    Have fun.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • For DD's 3rd birthday we did coloring pages, a cheap pin the jewel of Strawberry Shortcake's tiara game (for a Strawberry Shortcake themed party, of course), and a "strawberry hunt."  I made dozens of strawberry shaped containers, and filled them with candy and prizes, then I hid them around the room - they doubled as cheap decorations that I didn't have to take down afterwards!

All in all, it was just about right for her.  I really don't think you need to plan anything else, though.  Kids have a way of finding SOMETHING to do if there is downtime - a blown up balloon will keep kids entertained for hours!

Where did you get the Olivia floor puzzle? We are also doing an Olivia party and that would be perfect. It think you have more than enough activities. We are doing some Olivia coloring/activity placemats that I got from birthdayexpress.com What favors are you going to do if any? I still have to come up with favors. Also what is your little one wearing? I am debating between getting my Lo an Olivia dress or just a regular dress but I can't decide.

What are you doing for decorations?

  • for DD's 3rd it was a crayon theme -- i had color stations set up - a couple kids used them - they wanted to play with the giant blow up crayons and that was fun! we didnt even get to gifts because the kids were having such a good time. We also had a pinanta.

I think you have some great activities!

Sorry I can't make these clicky, but this was my inspiration for DD's party:

    https://www.hostessblog.com/2010/04/real-parties-olivia-the-pig-theme/

I am doing poms from the ceiling, a couple of red rose arrangements (out of reach of children) and "red foods" - like strawberries, red velvet cupcakes, red Koolaid, etc.  I think the floor puzzle was from celebrations express?   It also shows up in Amazon if you search there, I think.  Just google it.  DD is wearing a red tulle tutu and a pink Olivia t-shirt that says "Pretty in Red" in glittery font.  I might get her striped tights, too, but  I haven't decided.  If you search Olivia on Etsy, there is a really cute pillowcase dress with Olivia on it for like $25.  I bought the Olivia favor boxes and Olivia sticker sheets to go inside, as well as candy and some pig noses from Amazon that have elastic to go around your head.

I agree with the less is more.  The kids really just want to play so have the toys out that the kids can play with, close any rooms that you don't want the kids in and let them have fun.  Honestly, the art project, for many kids, can take as little as 5 mins and I would skip the floor puzzle or just have it out but not as a totally planned thing that all the kids have to do together.

  • I joke around that sometimes it is like herding cats with my own children and I've noticed that especially when hosting groups of toddlers.  I love your activities but you might want to do stations rather than trying to get the whole group to do it all at once.  Just an idea... I've never gotten the kids at our parties (or at other family members) to do the same thing all at once unless it was cake or pinanta.

Also plan on the boys maybe wanting to do tiaras not ties (or vice versa).  My son at this age loves those sorts of things and would be bummed if you didn't have a crown for him.

We have about 2wks till DD#1 has her 3rd birthday, and with luck it will be nice bc we are having an outside party; Spongebob themed She <3s spongebob. And I am kinda just going to the Dollar store to get lots of cheap fun things like, we have a HUGE sandbox (I got a hardplastic pool, and filled it with sand) and Im going to get buckets and shovels, then I found Giant bubble wands, and trays Im going to get. And if anything I always have my black lab that can help tucker the kiddos out.

Otherwise we are having cake, and Im even sending a Giant cookie home as a thank you. And burgers and hotdogs, things like that. Next party (which wont be until she is old enough to have friends from school) we hope to have a bouncy castle/house. But I think bubbles and sand, and shoot Im even thinking I might leave the blow up kiddie pool up for them.

  • My experience is that havig activities out is good, directing them and having specific times in mind can be bad.

At most parties I've been to for the under-5 set, the kids generally are so worked up they're not going to sit and do an activity.  Maybe the kids I know are just crazy!

  • I'd do a general play activity.

Put on some music. Set up a video camera (at a safe height) aimed in front of the tv. Connect the camera to the tv. The children can have a dance party and see themselves dancing "live" on the television.

They could wear their crafted items then also.

agree. DS1's bday party was at a beach club so it was a beach theme.  We got huge beach balls from the dollar store, and they were a hit.  The kids had fun running around with them.
