Drinking a glass or two of wine during pregnancy

I am 18 wks and haven't had any wine, beer, etc. Other moms have told me wine/beer in moderation is fine and even good for the baby. Is this true? Any moms-to-be have a glass or two of wine or anything else?

Re: Drinking a glass or two of wine during pregnancy

  • I have heard of a glass of wine every now abd then being ok, never heard about beer though.

IMHO, it is not worth it.  If you can't go 9 months without drinking don't get pg.

  • My doc said that if I wanted a glass around Christmas or New year's it was fine. And I have a few friends that had a glass every now and again.  But I never heard anyone say it was good for the baby.

  • My DH and I recently were discussing this because my hair stylist says she has wine now and then. I think it's absurd. Most information states to avoid alcohol during pregancy...except for a late term exception I believe. I say if a woman can't be without it for 9 months then it's likely not the right time for pregnancy.

  • I would never judge a person and say if they want to have an occassional glass of wine= not ready to be pregnant.  Absurd.  I would also never say it was GOOD for the baby, but I had a few glasses of wine towards the end of my pregnancy (not at one sitting!)  But it sure did feel good at the end of a HOT day and being exhausted from chasing a 20 month around in the August heat...to unwind and have a little bit of wine.

It's my opinion, not judging. My opinion is that it seems immature and/or a whole other issue to not be able curb drinking for several months while a baby is developing. A glass of lemonade would be just as satisfying for me in august.

  • Thanks for the replies. After hearing so many different thoughts on the topic I wanted to see other Bumpies' opinions. I am not one to judge others but I think I will stay away from alcohol during my pregnancy.

Thanks for clarifying, but still judging.

  • Wow!  You guys are way too uptight.  A glass of wine now and again will not harm your baby.  And judging those mother's who choose to have a glass every once in a while by saying, "they can't withhold for a few months" is judgmental and b!tchy!  Step off your high horse and relax a little.

  • With all the research and knowledge that has been developed regarding alcohol and effects during preganancy why on earth would anyone purposely expose their child? Like I said, I've heard of occasional glass of wine towards the end of the last trimester but not earlier. It's just my opinion and I think it's irresponsible. Now excuse me while I head out for a smoke...

  • I saw this post and decided to do some reasearch on my own. It turns out a glass of wine or two is not bad during your pregnancy. In new studies occasional to light drinking show no harm to the mother or baby. NOW that doesnt mean heavy drinking isnt harmful because it is. But the research I did said light drinking meant under 7 drinks a week but no more than 2 in a day. My in laws (their British) say that in your last few weeks a beer a day helps bring in your milk and I have actually heard that from a few people as well.

Bottom line you need to do research for yourself though, dont just listen to every post you hear. And also dont let anyone tell you your a bad mom for craving a glass of wine its your life and trust your instints.

    Happy Pregnancy!!

Funny that women will avoid things from chocolate to lunch meats and hot dogs but then say, oh 1 glass of wine per day is completely harmless, just don't dare have more then 2. In my opinion, for me, I wouldn't put my child at any avoidable risk. I'll enjoy a glass of wine after the birth.

  • I have done a lot of research on this topic and have read information stating that wine or beer while pregnant is actually good for you and the baby. A study done in the United Kingdom surveyed women over 10 years and the children whose mothers drank moderately had less behavioral problem, less cognitive problems, and fewer attention problems than mothers who abstained completely. The American idea that abstaining comes from too many people over indulging and having babies with fetal alcohol syndrome. Of course you should always check with your doctor, but things I have read say that moderation meaning no more than two in a sitting and no more than four a week of beer or wine no liquor is fine and actually good for you. It makes sense if you think about it look at how many children have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD... just some food for thought.
