I don't know the answer to your first question, but we did have to stay 48 hours. I think our pedi would have released us earlier, but my labor was really quick so I didnt get the antibiotics in the required 4 hours. August's blood cell count was low so they kept us as a precaution.

Which makes me realize she did say that the 48 hour stay would be if we didn't get all of the antibiotics in before delivery.
My midwife said that if I had been positive I would get the antibotics but then could be off the IV. So the heplock would be so they coudl hook you up right away and then you could be off it unless you needed it again. And my hospital requires a 48 hour stay after the birth occurs if you were GBS positive.

So the heplock is a good thing because IV's suck.
The stupid MW was talking so damn fast that I couldnt catch everything she said. I kind of thought she said we'd have to stay the 48 only if I didn't get all of the antibiotics but maybe I am wrong. I know the rules between hospitals and birthing centers are very different though.
Yup, hep lock is good. It means they can give you the drugs and set you free. It's just a thing stuck to your hand.
I needed antibiotics post-birth, so I got a heplock (technically, saline lock) and they injected a dose every 6 hours. They did say they could do it with a bag of fluids, but if they went slow it didn't hurt. No idea if that's a possibility for the GBS antibiotics, or if those are always given as a drip.

Someone on 0-3 just told me that she had a hep and a very small bag of the antibiotics and not a full drip. I'm hoping for that because I don't want the extra fluid since I can eat, drink, etc.
We didn't stay quite 48 hours. DD was doing well and no one saw the need. I also got one full dose of antibiotics. I didn't get the two that are preferred.

this is what they did for me too- I was hoping the would take the hep-loc out after the antibiotics, but by the time they antibiotics were done it wasn't a big deal for it to be there. It was actually kinda nice b/c I ended up with 2 doses of Zofran b/c I kept throwing up.
If I was going to be in labor much longer we would have talked saline b/c I was getting dehydrated and not keeping anything down
As much as I was against having any fluids- I would have at that point.
