BFing while Pregnant

I was told that you ladies may be able to help me here.

I had my first appointment this week with my OB and she said that she wants me to stop BFing LO #1 by the time I'm 20 weeks along.  According to my current EDD (which is subject to change) LO will be 1 day shy of a year old when I am 20 weeks along.  Is it imperative that I stop BFing by 20 weeks?  Is the risk of pre-term labor high enough to warrant me stopping by 20 weeks?  My OB said that it's unlikely that I would start having contractions but just to be safe I should stop.

Anyone have experience with this? Input/thoughts?

TIA!

Re: BFing while Pregnant

  • I hit 20 weeks yesterday and I am still BFing DD.  My DD is older than yours and nurses less, so that may be an issue.  My OB said that it was fine if I breastfed through my entire pregnancy as long as I didn't spot or have contractions.  She told me to "back off" at that point, but not to wean.  I have not had either issue.  Maybe you could call a lactation consultant to talk about your particular situation.  www.kellymom.com also has lots of great info.

At some point, you will start to produce colostrum.  Your LO may wean then or keep on going.  You will notice that your LO starts to eat more solids as your supply decreases.  My supply has definitely decreased, but DD still asks to nurse 3 times a day and I can still see milk.  DD gets 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day (she is almost 2).  GL!

  • My doc has given me the ok to nurse as long as it's working for us. As PP stated, if I started to have pt labor or any other complications, we would re-evaluate. Ella is 16 months old and has actually started nursing more frequently. I think she's cutting molars :/

As long as all three of us are doing well, I plan to continue.

  • Thanks for the feedback.  I appreciate it.  My OB didn't go into much detail with me but she has referred me to the LC at the hospital before, so I wasn't sure if she was up to date on everything or not.  I will definitely give them a call.

    Thanks again!

  • In case you want more thoughts- this has been discussed a lot on here lately.  Most recently- Viv07 (sp?) posted a day or two ago about it and it should be in the pretty recent posts if you scroll back.

My RE told me bf was fine as long as there aren't special circ to consider as the pg goes along.  I have done some research and have found nothing that makes me consider stopping.  The old school of thought was to not bf, out of caution, but studies haven't shown benefit to stopping.  The NP at my OB randomly ordered my to quit bf one day when I was speaking her @ an rx (it was actually pretty strange).  My OB didn't bring it up to me at all and there was an opening when I mentioned that I think I may have O'd a little late due to bf.  I don't plan on specifically asking, since I feel comfortable with what I have read and don't have any special factors (preterm labor etc).  In my case, I don't consider it a medical issue, but a parenting one, and I plan to continue bf as long as it works for me, LO and the baby inside.

Did you have any PTL problems w/your previous pgs?  My OB (and my reading) said that this was a bigger predictor of whether or not you'll have any PTL problems while BFing while pg.  I BFed through my 2nd pg and had no problems, and my OB was great about it.
