Breastfeeding help for a first timer...

So I know it takes a few days for your milk to come in but I'm on day 3 and still nothing. When I squeeze my boobs barely anything comes out if any. I don't leak anything at all my boobs are not getting any bigger and are not sore. Except from LO sucking on them of course. She feeds on each boob for quite a bit most of the time but I just feel like she is not getting anyhing out of them. Anyone else take a while for their milk to come in?

  • I had LO on a Thursday and my milk came in the next Monday. I'm not sure what's typical, but it was 4 days for me so I'm sure you're still ok!

  • It can take up to 7 days I think.

Babies tummys are small, like thimble sized. She is probably getting plenty. Just keep feeding her often, the stimulation will help bring your milk in.

Also, this time, I didn't have any engorgement. DD is such an effective eater, there was never a time that she wasn't emptying my breasts, so they were never large and uncomfortable.

Make sure you are drinking lots, I think that helps. My milk came in day 4 with DD #1, and Day 3 with DD #2. It's hard to wait, but the collustrum is great for babies and plenty filling. It just digests faster, so baby might be eating often.

Oh, and my lactation consultant is fantastic!!! You should find one and ask her if you can come in before a feeding and weigh your little one, and then weigh her after she has a full feeding. So that way you can see on the scale how much she ate in one sitting. It will probably surprise you!

  • It took me 4 days for my milk to come in. According to my LC the more she tries to feed the faster the milk will come in. They even gave me a manual breast pump and said to use it between feedings to try and get the milk to come in faster.

  • Your baby is more effective at getting the milk out than your hand, or even a pump, is. She's probably getting more than you think. I didn't even get colostrum in for almost a week after DS#1 was born, but latching him on as much as I could helped the milk come in faster. Just keep at it! Check for the number of dirty & wet diapers and that will tell you what she is (or isn't) getting.

Definitely watch the output - what goes in, comes out. If you're getting enough diapers, the baby is doing fine.

  • FWIW, it took 4 days for me as well.

  • In addition to above, hydrate hydrate hydrate. Drink wayyy more water than you think you should. My LC said about say 5 is pretty normal for a 1 at baby, but 2nd babies usually milk comes earlier. Not sure if that is true, but that is what she told me! I can feel my boobs more today, so I think my milk is coming in. DD2 was born Tues afternoon.

  • Mine took 5 days with DS. I'm hoping it's quicker this time. Just watch the output and concentrate on feeding the baby often and getting in a full feeding (make sure she stays awake). I would also suggest making an appointment the LC at your hospital if you have questions.

Like pps said, watch your baby's diapers.  If she's wetting diapers and pooping, then she's getting something. Babies are able to live off colostrum for days before your milk comes in.

You may have more milk than you think.  It can be hard to get milk out by hand--babies are much better at getting it out than you or even a pump.

My milk with my first didn't come in until 5 days postpartum and she was fine.  I exclusively breastfed her so even though my milk came in a little bit later than some people's, she got all she needed.

  • Everything that needed to be said has been said.  My nurses/midwives were more interested in the diapers than how much you were producing, since this is a better indicator.
