Multiples

How many weeks were you when you found out?

I was just wondering how many weeks along you ladies were when your found out you were having twins or more? We did not do any sort of IVF or something that might put us at a higher chance of having twins. Our pregnancy has been going alright for the most part. I am measuring ahead and the doctor mentioned at our last appointment we could have two in there. He is making me wait til my 20 ultrasound (which is in 2 weeks) to find out for sure. Did any of you have to wait that long? Did you know in your gut you were having multiples? I've told my DH that this pregnancy seems odd and that everything seems to be happening sooner. I've hhad multiple dreams we are having twins. Thanks ladies. Sorry it was long. I'm nervous and excited to see what's going on inside this big belly.

Re: How many weeks were you when you found out?

  • i found out at 9 weeks.  My ob does a routine u/s at that time for everyone.  I find it odd that your ob would have you wait until 20 weeks if he has suspicions.  Anyway good luck and let us know the outcome!!

  • I found out at our 8wk visit when there were 2 babies on the ultrasound.  I would think you'd need to find out before 20weeks to make sure you're being monitored enough if there are twins. GL!

  • We found out at my first ultrasound at 7 weeks.  I was an IVF patient, so we had early monitoring.

  • I didn't find out until my "big" u/s at 17 weeks.

I suspected twins b/c I was huge and felt like crap but I didn't say anything to my doctor.

  • They do a routine ultrasound around 12 weeks... I think I was 12 weeks 5 days when we found out. It does seem odd however that if your doctor suspects multiples that he would not send you for and ultrasound sooner than your 20 week one!

  • This is how I feel. I am more tired this time around, I'm huge, and just in general feel different. Our big ultrasound is at 20 weeks. I guess we will wait to see. Thanks!
  • 5w6d...no IVF either so no clue that it was twins till we saw the US. I could not imagine waiting until 20 weeks to find out for sure! Good luck!

  • How big are you measuring?  I found out at 7.5 weeks after begging my MW for an early u/s after a prior miscarriage.  Glad I was pushy, otherwise I would be finding out about now!

  • I didn't find out until my 19 week ultrasound - I didn't have an early one, and my doc had only picked up one heartbeat so far (of course, she wasn't looking for the second one...) There was also a long span of time between weeks 13 and 19 where I didn't see my doctor due to scheduling, so maybe she would have figured it out during that time. I think the measuring ahead can be normal... you did say something I truly felt, though - that idea that things are "happening faster." I was kind of big, but for a second baby, a lot of people told me I was probably just showing faster. However, inside I had this bizarre feeling that I was so much farther along than I supposedly was.  Alot of this was due to not just to the size, but the shape of my belly, the way I was having pains and movement so early... to the point I was staring at myself in the mirror in the middle of the night thinking, what is going on with my body??  I didn't believe it was twins... but now I think that was just denial! Good luck; it's a blessing whether it is one or two.

  • I had an u/s at 10 weeks and found out then that we are having twins.  I had an early u/s only because my progesterone was a little bit low.  The thought of having twins never even crossed my mind.  Twins run in my mom's family but she's from Korea and all of her relatives are there so even though I knew we had twins in our family, I don't see them for holidays or anything so I kinda forgot.

  • I found out yesterday at 8 weeks... I definitely had a feeling so when she showed us the second heartbeat I was like "I knew it!" I've been extremely exhausted, lots of m/s, and showing early. That doesn't necessarily mean twins though so I guess I just had that instinct.
  • Thanks! Our doctor doesn't do early ultrasound either only once you get about 20 weeks. As soon as he finds one heart beat we move on. He did look for a second heartbeat this last appointment but my toddler was screaming the whole time so it didn't work well. I feel the same way. I look at myself and say what is going on in this belly. People think I'm due sometime this summer and when I tell them no they look at me in shock. I feel tons of movement. Something in my gut just tells me there is two.

  • I was 5 weeks 4 days when I found out.  I found out I was pg a week earlier and had such bad nausea they agreed to see me so I could get some zofran.  I then mentioned I was having terrible cramping and they send me for an u/s and there were the two sacs.  I went for a follow up 2 weeks later to see if both developed heartbeats and they did.

  • We found out at our 12 week NT scan. NO idea it was twins until the ultrasound, nurse even only found 1 HB right before we walked into the u/s.

Multiples isn't any indication of extra symptoms or symptoms coming on earlier, only way to know for sure is the u/s. GL!

  • I found out at 19 weeks.

I didn't have anyway to believe to tell, I barely had any symptoms. I did measure ahead at my 15 week check up, but who would think it is twins. The doctor I was going to didn't have an u/s machine so I had to wait until 18 weeks, but got it done at 19 weeks. I didn't get to surprised because my mom is a twin, so I should of expect that outcome. Before I did find out my mom would say that I might have twins, I would always say there is no way lol. But I'm so happy to see my girls very soon :)

  • I found out in my 10th week at my first routine u/s with the OB.  I had gained weight pretty quickly and starting to show a little already, so we jokingly thought it might be twins.  I also had a dream about having twins.  I didn't have a gut feeling, just a suspicion that proved to be true.  However, I think many women feel this way and end up not having twins.  Multiples are not the only reason to be measuring ahead,  I wonder why your Dr. won't do an u/s earlier if he suspects multiples?  It seems like a pretty valid reason.  Multiple pregnancies need be monitored more closely even before 20 weeks.  I would push for an u/s before then.
