Infertility

Price for IUI??

Our insurance does not cover any infertility treatment, so we will be paying for the D-IUI OOP. The clinic that DH and I go to has the IUI procedure at $800, not including meds. I've called around to different clinics in our area and found one that has the IUI procedure for $200. Now these amounts do not include the price for monitoring because my insurance will cover that.

Other clinics I have called are around the $400-$1000 mark. My questions is, how can some clinics be at $800 and another clinic be at $200? I made an appointment with the clinic that has the IUI for $200, and it seems like a great clinic, but now I'm kind of freaking out that we are "going to get that we pay for". Should I be conderned with that price point and not getting a quality IUI, or is that around the price it should be?

Also, this clinic is a 2hr drive away (we live near Milkwaukee, WI and it's in Madison, WI). Do you think there will be any issues with monitoring and doing the IUI when we have a 2hr drive to the clinic?

Re: Price for IUI??

  • My clinic charges $164 for the actual IUI and it's done by the RE, not a nurse (that price doesn't include monitoring costs or meds). I'm not sure how that compares to what the other ladies on the board pay though. $1000 seems awfully high to me though for just the actual IUI.

I wouldn't think the 2 hr. drive would be a problem if you're OK with it. You may have to hang out there a while though the day of your actual IUI because it'll take them a few hours to wash your H/SO's sperm the day of the IUI. We usually drop off his sample and get my b/w done the day of the IUI between 7-8am and then I go back at 11am for the actual IUI. HTH.

  • $800 seems really high to me. I've had IUIs at 2 different clinics and the price of the actual procedure only was around $250 at both places.

  • I am thinking the 800 price includes cd 3 u/s, monitoring, sperm wash/prep and the iui itself. Thats what my clinic charges for a standard stimulation cycle (clomid).

  • I just paid 585.00 for mine.   I would call and ask about the drive.  Is your DH going with and doing his sample there.  If he's planning on doing it at home than it won't work becasue you have to get it there in 1 hour.

  • My RE's office charges (I believe) $1,000 package price.  This covers all monitoring appts. - b/w, u/s, sperm washing, and the actually IUI.  This price does not include meds.

  • My clinic charges $121 for the IUI and $280ish for the sperm washing.  A nurse practitioner does the actual IUI procedure, but my RE makes all the decisions about treatment, etc.

I drive 2 hours to my clinic.  My clinic works with my OBGYN's office for monitoring appointments -- my RE faxes the order to my OBGYN's office, and I get the u/s and b/w done there on mornings.  My OBGYN signs off on it (I never actually see her), and the office faxes it to my RE's office that day.   I get a phone call from my RE's office in the afternoon with the results and they tell me what to do.

On the day of the IUI, we get there at the time for DH's appointment, and then we have an hour and a half to kill before it's time for the IUI.

The only trouble I have with my clinic being far away is when I have scheduling conflicts at work -- since I drive 4 hours round trip, it's a 6 hour ordeal -- that's a lot of time to block out of your work day.

  • My clinic charges $300 for the IUI itself and it is always done by the RE not the nurse. If you could work out a way to get your monitoring done by your local OB like the PP did that would seem doable in my opinion. Otherwise, I would never be able see a doctor 2 hours away given the amount of monitoring required for an IUI.

    GL with your decision.

  • I thought the $800 was with the monitoring too, but she said no. Now this was a receptionist so many she got it wrong?? I'll call tomorrow and ask.

Questions... since we are doing a donor sperm IUI will there be a need to wait for the wash, or will it be ready when we get there?

I seriously need to make a list of questions because I can see myself meeting with the RE and forgetting all the questions I had! Any advice on anything else I should ask about?

  • Mine were around 400 for iui and wash, etc.  Not meds or monitoring (which my ins covers).  A nurse always does it and I have to drive 2 hrs to it also.  Luckily my monitoring appts are only a half hour away though.

They will still do a sperm count/check on the donor sperm and they have to thaw it, mine will not take it out of the freezer until we are on the premises due to liability......mine is $317 for just the IUI and the sperm check.  The monitoring appts are $330 and then there is drugs, the donor sperm, etc.
