car got hit last night

Today has been a rather crappy day. Got woken up at 4am by neighbor who saw a car smash into the rear of my Murano (no license plate info at that point). The rear bumper and trunk are done for, it's probably going to be around $5000.

We called the police and he wrote up a report. Then I called Geico and they said that b/c it was a hit and run it was a no-fault accident and I only have to pay $250 to have the car fixed. Yeah. Went back to bed.

Then... another knock on the door. The policeman found a front car bumper for a Jeep, with the license plate on it. The license plate was in a plastic holder with a word on it in white paint and the exact words are now imprinted on my car bumper. So at that point the policeman was able to get us the other driver's info and license plate #. I called Geico and explained.

Well, that was stupid b/c now Geico will not pay unless we pay our $1000 deductible, so the other insurance company has to pony up. And they wanted ME to call that insurance company and explain. You can imagine how motivated the other company and the driver will be to follow through with this.

So now I don't know what to do. Should I call Geico and demand that they harass the other ins. company? Because I don't have time or energy to do that job and besides, why do I pay car insurance for then?

WWYD? The car needs repairs bad. I can't open the trunk and even though the car is driveable, I don't want to put Adrian in it until it gets fixed.

This sucks. Oh, and Adrian has been sick and now I'm getting sick too. I'm so pissed.

Re: car got hit last night

  • So the guy who hit you actually had insurance?   That in itself is a miracle. Seriously... most of these morons don't have it and then you're really SOL.  Do you know which company he/she has???   It'll be pretty easy if it's one of the "majors"---Allstate, State Farm, Farmers and a few others.  It will suck if it's a fly-by-night operation or an online company.

Since there's a police report and charges for hit-and-run, there's no denying the claim by the other company.   It really should just be a phone call with the police case number and the ball gets rolling.   If you have a Geico agent, they can help you with that stuff.  But if it's just Geico you're dealing with directly.. .um.. good luck getting any support.  It's crap like this that makes me glad I stopped selling insurance.

I used to be a Farmers Insurance agent in Auto/Home/Life.  Sorry to say this, but Geico sucks for customer service.  But I think you just discovered this.  I'm sorry!   Unless you have an agent, you probably won't get much support from your insurer.  Those low cost joints can afford to be cheap because they don't really do anything helpful when it gets messy.  And this one, frankly, isn't very messy at all. Pretty cut and dried, really.

Crappity crap! I'm so sorry, Cristina.

As inclined as I'd be to avoid all the work of dealing with the insurance companies, if it's got to be fixed it's got to be fixed... so I'd just suck it up and get it over with.

    :(

Yes, he has insurance. What kind, I don't know. If it's just the basic insurance he might have to pay more money and might start by denying the claim. But if he's smart he won't do that because hit and run is a crime in Texas and at the very least he'll get his license suspended and sued by me, and at worst he could go to jail, especially if he has a prior record.

Actually, if he didn't have insurance it would be better for me b/c Geico would file the claim as non-insured driver property damage and I would only have to pay $250.

I think what will end up happening if the other driver gets difficult is we'll have to pony up the $1000 ded. and get the car fixed, and then Geico will go after the other company and we will get reimbursed... sometime.

    Ugh!

  • Oh Farmers??  That's a good thing!   But I'm a bit biased.

When I worked for them, I was always pleased about the way they handled claims, compared to other crappy companies. (Nationwide/Geico/Progressive)  Of course, there are still a million ways they can screw you over, but for the most part, their customer service and payouts are super fast and extremely easy to work with.   In some places, they have drive-up claims departments so you just take your car to them and they'll assess it on the spot.   They were also quick to hand you a check for a rental, etc, if you needed it.   Now I'm not sure how they do it when you're the victim of one of their customers, tho.  But that jerk should have an agent so you can start bugging the crap outta that person if you don't get satisfaction.

When we wrecked our truck on an icy road, we had a check within a couple of days.  Pretty much no questions asked.

  • First off, thank goodness no one was in your car.  I saw your title and started to think the worst.  And what the heck with Geico - isn't that why you pay them?  To deal with the other insurance company?  I've never heard of that before.  GL with the outcome - and I hope you both get better soon.
  • Sorry about this whole thing. I am also with Geico. When something similar happened to me, I did pay the $1000 first and let Geico deal with the other insurance. My deductible was $ 500 though, so Geico payed me back 500 after everything was done.

Several years back I got rear-ended by a girl who had Farmers insurance and they were a piece of cake to deal with for the repairs. Good luck and switch to State Farm ;) (not an employee, just a loyal customer)

You know, my insurance is just up for renewal, so I might just do that. I'm still dealing with Farmers. They called to get my statement but the other driver still hasn't answered his phone. So they need a police report, which will take 10 days to prepare. It's going to take a while but the car is driveable, so I'm going to put off paying the deductible as much as I can. I hope everything works out soon, I hate having this kind of stuff looming over me.
