Food Allergy

Anyone keep a food journal for LO?

DS has had food allergy testing, so we know what he's allergic to as far as the common allergies go...

But the red dye post got me thinking about how we'd figure out if any allergic reactions were triggered by things I wouldn't otherwise think about (like red dye).

If you keep a food journal, do you list just the food, or do you list the ingredients as well? How do you organize your food journal? How long after trying a new food do you record "results"?

I hope my questions make sense. :) I have been thinking about starting a food journal for DS, but I'm kind of at a loss as to how I should do it.

  • I just got a notebook and wrote down what she ate and then in the margin noted when she had any symptoms.

  • i just put down what he eats b/c he has such a small amount of foods he eats that if i write down "mac&chreese" or "oat w/ flax" -i will know exactly what it is and if i need the ingredients i will go for the box or know what i put in it.

Also, at the end of the day i write down how his skin is..

  • We eliminated dyes for several months and then our dd got in to some at school.  It was clear within an hour that she was having a severe reaction to them.  After four days of hell we swore off dyes forever....never again.  We used to keep a food journal for her when she was eating processed foods but we eliminated those so there isn't a real need to list out ingredients or keep a super strict journal anymore.  I do a meal plan so that pretty much serves the same purpose now.
