Flying and Ear Infections

So apparently Murphy's Law is in full effect, and the girls have managed to get ear infections (Jillian has never even had one) just before traveling.  We fly to Alabama on Sunday morning.  They will finish up their last dose of Azithromycin just before we leave.  The doctor also gave us ear drops and told us to administer tylenol one hour before the flight.  Does anybody have any experience in flying with kids with recent ear infections?  I already expected this flight (first leg is a long one...to Atlanta) to be hell with a 1 year old and 2.5 year old even with two adults.  Now I'm wondering if it will be worse than hell.

And I'm so glad that despite all my doubts about them having ear infections that I insisted DH take them to the doctor yesterday.

Re: Flying and Ear Infections

  • You might be surprised and things may go better than you hunk. The first time we flew wig Hudson at 9 months he had an ear infection..we did the drops just before take off and he did great..actually fell asleep before take off. I expected it to be hell and was pleasantly surprised! GL!!

  • No advice, really, than just to be understanding (which I know you will be) if they are in pain.  I have had chronic ear probs since birth, and I have cried many times as a child and as an adult while flying even without an active infection (and I have a high pain tolerance :) Have the attendant make a warm compress if needed. And FYI- each time you land and take off, it makes it worse, so taking off from Atlanta and landing in AL may be bad...

Good luck, and hopefully they will be lil champs through it all :)  And have a great trip!  (Hope I wasn't too much of a downer, just wanted to warn you of possibilities)
