Cloth Diapering

Did you take cloth diapers to the hospital with you?

I hope this isn't something that gets asked all the time. If it is, I apologize.

I'm wondering about taking cloth diaps to the hospital with us when we go. If you did, how many did you pack?

  • I didn't want to worry about having to do laundry the minute we got home so just used the disposables the hospital provided.  Plus I did send DS to the nursery occasionally and didn't want to worry about explaning it to the nurses or risk having one tossed out.

Thanks. This is the other option we are considering. I'm kind of thinking the fewer things we can take to the hospital, the better.

I didn't even think of that! That would be very upsetting.

  • My hospital uses prefolds and covers.  But, I probably would have.  My boyfriend could have done the laundry.  For the next one that we aren't even TTC yet we will take a going home diaper and maybe some for photo ops.  The ones at the hospital aren't that cute.

  • We did, but ended up just trying one out and then using sposies until we left.  The sposies have a line that changes color with pee, and it was just easier. FWIW I took my whole NB stash, lol.  They dont use that many diapers the first few days, she had maybe 5 meconium dipes and 3 pee dipes the whole time we were there (we left before the 36 hour mark, though, so we weren't there long).  I was 100% hell-bent on NOT having disposables on DD AT ALL - but I tell you, there's so much else you are trying to figure out, it was easier to just look at the line and know, lol.  I put a cloth diaper on her for the ride home (Lil Joey) and haven't used a sposie since (course, it's only her 3 day of life and our 2nd day home!).

  • Our hospital used prefolds too. I wouldn't have wanted to use my own until she was done with the meconium poo - I don't know how hard that is to wash out.

  • I don't plan to.  I will just use the sposies they have, plus i don't want to deal with the meconium. Thats some nasty stuff!

  • i'm planning on using disposables in the hospital bc it will just be easier lol.  but i will bring a couple for the ride home.

(although i'm tempted to bring my own sposies bc i'm scared of drymax being in the diapers if the hospital uses pampers.. which i assume that's what brand they have there).

  • I like the idea of using cloth in the hospital, but I don't want to deal with the first poops. So I will probably bring seventh generation diapers with me.

  • I didn't but next time I will. DD had a bad reaction to the stupid Pampers in the hospital. Sad

  • I kinda want to...my hospital makes you pay for a supply bag of stuff- including a sitz bottle, wipes, diapers, heavy duty pads for pp bleeding. Granted the bag is only $20...I don't feel like paying for it since I will be having to pay some of the costs out of pocket.
  • Nah, we just started when we got home.

The end of the meconium transition washed out fine, though. I just didn't need one more thing to worry about at the hospital.

Call your hospital and ask what diapers they use. Mine does not use pampers sensitive (which does not have drymax) but does use the regular swaddlers (which does have drymax). We are taking either huggies naturals or seventh generation.

I will be taking a prefold and cover from our diaper service (okay maybe a few) to the hospital to use on our way home. The service washes our diapers (we are only using it for a month) so I'm not too worried about laundry, but due to the way it is set up, if I use too many and miss the pick up day for laundry I'd have to wash them all myself.

Now.. where to find the perfect cover for my little girl.. ohh the picture ops! :)

  • That WAS the plan, but it didn't happen that way. I was induced at 36w2d, so I didn't have anything. I thought I had more time. DD was 4lbs @birth so I ended up using the preemie pampers swaddlers. We switched to Earth's best until DD was about 6lbs and then we cd'd. (I think she was 8-10 weeks by that point).

  • I gave birth at a birth center with DD, not a hospital but we took cloth and used it from the very beginning.  She didn't have a diaper on for the first 2 hours - they put her first one on right after her newborn exam.  She only went through 2 diapers but we only stayed 6 hours after she was born.  If we were at a hospital, I would have done the same.  I was really determined to use them from the very start since DS only started when he was 5 months.

  • I was going to, but changed my mind--

our hospital bag is already packed insanely tightly, and we are using the birthing center and will only be there 12 hours post delivery--

I figure she can wear a couple of sposies until I get home :)

If I was going to be there a couple of days, I would definitely bring with me!

  • No, I didn't want to at the hospital with the meconium and having to worry about the laundry.
  • Yes! It was super easy and laundry wasn't a big deal, only takes a minute to throw it in. Plus meconium, as gross and impossible as it looks, washed out easily and stained far less- if at all- than EBF poo!

  • I did not.  It seemed like a big deal at the time.  But in hindsight it totally wouldn't have been a big deal.  I will for sure bring CDs to the hosp next time.

  • I started right away. I brought all of our pefolds and covers.

  • We did not and ended up spending an entire week at the hospital so it's a good thing!  DD wore sposies for another 2 weeks when we got home (that's how many they sent us home with) which is good b/c she barely fit into her NB diapers.  That and I didn't have enough NB as it was.

This time I have enough NB dipes but I will only bring 1-2 for the ride home.  This baby might also need to spend extra time in the hospital (hoping for the best but expecting the worst).

  • I plan to bring LO home in cloth but use sposies the hospital provides. I have some very cute lil joeys packed in my hospital bag already :)

  • I plan to bring him home in one. I packed a few to try out.

I'll use disposables in the hospital and bring home any extras. If I don't use them I'll give them to someone else.
