July 2011 Moms

My mom hates my son name...

My huband and I have been trying for 3 years,I had 5 miscarraiges along the way to becoming a 2nd time mom. I promised him when we conceived that he could name our child. So once we did and we find out it was a boy he was over the top happy. I let him have full control over naming his first born son, which he choose Israel Ray E. I love the name and I have been calling my son by that name every since he decided. When my mother found out her grandson name she didnt try to spare my feelings by no means. She told me right off hand please dont name your son that, I explain to her that his dad picked it out and I like it. She went on to tell me that people would not like it and it would be hard for him to get a job with that name.(REALLY)??? So now Im so sad by her statements and really feel bad that she doesnt support my husband and I on our name choice.

Re: My mom hates my son name...

  • My mom hates my name choice too (my girl name choice as I don't know what we're having).  I just keep telling her that it's not her choice and that we love the name.  I'm sure once she sees the baby with the name attached she will learn to love the name.

  • My mother criticized every name I asked her about when I was preggo with DS and absolutely hates the name DH and I picked for DD.  She loves DS and will love DD, regardless of their names.  Don't sweat it.  She's just providing an opinion on it and you don't need to pay her any mind.  She will love your son no matter what his name is.

  • When our name was just part of a list, she hated it. Once we chose it to be our daughter's name she suddenly thinks it's so beautiful and brags about what a great name we've chosen. Hahaha. I'm sorry that your mom is being, well, so rude! It's not her place to say. It's reactions like these that make me understand why people keep the name a secret until baby is here. Just remind her that this is your child and thus you get to name him, and that her input is not needed nor is it welcome, as the name will not be changed.

  • Ray is the middle name and E is the last name?  What's wrong with Israel?  There was an Israel at my HS and noone thought twice about it.  Israel Ray sounds very similar, but I'm assuming you'll only be calling him by his first name.  My mom hated my niece and nephew's name and now don't even think about it, their names fit them perfectly.  Good luck!

  • This was my mom too when we just had DS's name on a list.  She went on and on about how she didn't like it blah, blah, blah.  Once we picked his name we decided to keep it a secret because we didn't want to hear comments from the peanut gallery.  Now my mom LOVES his name.

With DD if we ever decide on a name we will keep it a secret as well until she is born.

  • When my father's mom came to the hospital after I was born and my mom told her that my name was Jessica, the first thing she said was "Ew. I hope you don't call her Jessy!"

She got over it and your MIL will too.

    Also, congratulations on your son!

  • Wanted to add this as well (to help bolster what PPs are telling you, too). Before my nephew was born my mother hated the name my brother had chosen to name his son. The moment my mom laid eyes on her grandson she adored him, and she even loves his name now, too. The person makes the name, not the other way around.

We got plenty of negative comments about our son's name George.  Including DH's grandma who screamed "EWWWWWWWW, I hate that name!" in the middle of a Christmas party.  And now everyone loves him and his name, ha, go figure:) Once it's attached to the baby she loves she will get over it.  And this time around we have learned our lesson, NO ONE is finding out our name picks until we have the baby! And I'd like to add it's driving them crazy, which is making me laugh inside:)
  • She will have to get over it... if you both like it- then that is all that matters.

You have a Talon too :) I have got looks from my husband's side a little, but no one has said anything outright...I think it's because Tallen is a nickname for him, but I wasn't going down the Big Tony Little Tony Littlest Tony route. We are naming LO after my husband, Tony Allen, who is named after his father (who we see ALOT), so a nickname was a given.

  • Ok, first of all, fabulous name!

Second of all...tell her to have her own kid and she can pick the name.  Your kid, your name,  end of story.  Unless you make it and raise it, you don't get a say and it is super rude to comment the way she did on someone's choice.

Yup, and I love his name and the fact that IRL I don't know any others!  It has made it very hard to agree on a name for DD because I want something different for her too.

When I called my brother to tell him that DS was born and what his name was he just said oh um congrats and then didn't say much more.  He is the only one that really said anything not so good about his name.

  • My mother is the same way. When we told her LO name her direct quote was: you're going to kill him with that name.

It is not up to the grandparents or anyone else to pick YOUR childs name. Every one can shove it bc in the end once they see the baby, they will love it no matter the name.

Oh. My mother now asks me hows the "President" or hows "Roosevelt"? When asking about LO.

I'm hoping she'll get over it soon. Before I tell her out loud to shove it.

  • With DD#2 we told the name and got some ugly response from my father, so this time we are not telling anyone the name. I figure once she is here they won't say anything bad or at least not to us.

Don't let her bother you. She had her chance to name her kids not it is yours and you DH's turn.

  • Thank all you ladies, that makes me feel so much better!!! I felt so bad because I couldnt understand how my own mother could be so freaking rude!!! But after reading some of you guys post I feel like THIS IS MY CHILD SO ....... you!! LOL Well I wouldnt never say that but thats what i'm thinking.

  • It's your kid, not hers. She'll get over it.
  • I'm not telling my mom or anyone for this exact reason.  It's my kid and I'll name her whatever I want and I don't want to feel upset b/c someone else doesn't like it.  I figured once it's done, it's done and I won't have to think about others opinions.

  • I LOVE that name...love it.

We aren't sharing names because people's style is so different and frankly I don't care  what anyone thinks.

Your baby - your name. Too bad mom.

  • I think it's a nice name.....and I'm both Israeli and American.  I've heard of a few people called 'Israel' here in the US.  I can see why your mother would be worried about your son getting a job.  There is a lot of antisemitism and prejudice towards Jewish people and Israel....so maybe...just maybe....there might be some crazed lunatic who may have issues with the name, they may assume he's Jewish...but that is really stretching it! LOL.  I'm sure your son will be fine, and he'll have no problems in his life.  People name their children...Egypt, Asia, etc..so why not Israel.  :)

  • We didn't name DS until after he was born and NO one liked it, but at that point theres no changing it (i wouldnt anyway cuz it was my pick =) ) I seriously hate people's reactions to our baby name selections so even though we've decided on one for LO we are just saying we havent decided yet....

but yes, now my family all says how well my DS name fits him....

  • she needs to get over herself and not speak for others. i, for one, like the name!
