First Birthday Party picnic food

Well, we finally found a great park to have Charlie's party at! Now I'm wondering about food.  The party will be held on June 4th at 11am.  I live near Chicago, so there's a good chance it will be warm and humid.  Does anyone have any suggestions for food to serve that won't get "icky" in the heat? We will be having cupcakes in lieu of cake to make things a little bit easier.  Some of the things people have suggested have been:

Subs (will they get slimy?)

Fruit salad

Pasta salad

Veggie tray

Thanks!!

Re: First Birthday Party picnic food

  • If you have a good cooler, the subs should be fine.  I think simplicity is key. You'll have a lot to do so if you get sandwiches (or wraps) at Costco or BJs and the salads and veggies, plus potato chips, pita chips, etc., you'll be fine.

  • I agree with Robyn, a good cooler is in order.  But if you are looking for non-refrigerated items, fruit, veggies, nuts, nut butters, bruschetta would work.

  • I would worry about the dip for the veggie tray.  Can you take a grill?  It might be easier and cheaper to do hot dogs.

  • You should be able to find vinegar-based recipes for potato or macaroni salad (rather than mayo-based).

Baked beans should hold up to the heat, and are tasty at room temp (or outdoor warm weather temp).

You could put the veggie dip in a small thermos or put a larger bowl with ice under the bowl of dip (like on a salad bar). Or just skip the dip altogether.

As Vanverth suggested you could grill.  Does the park have grills available?

You can also put out smaller amounts of food and refill as things get eaten.  It will be a bit more of a pain, but maybe someone will be willing to help out. Just make sure to repeat several times that there is more food,k you are just concerned about it sitting out in the heat so that people won't be shy about asking for more.

  • Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately, this park does not allow grilling. Otherwise that would be a great idea!

  • This may get an ick response but I love cold fried chicken, vinegar based red potato salad, chili lime corn on the cob.  instead of mayo dip you can do pita chips, hummus, and babaganoush (sp)

i love cold fried chicken at a picnic.  and it's easy for kids to handle.
