NBR: Wedding Checks

We usually give checks as wedding gifts and typically the bride and groom cash it right away.  We went to a wedding almost a month ago and the check hasn't cleared yet.  How long would you wait to say something to make sure that they got it?  (I know sometimes cards get lost/stollen at wedding receptions so I always worry about that happening.)  Also they did not go on a honeymoon so its not like they've been away traveling and didn't get a chance to cash it.

  • hmmm if they didn't have a honeymoon I'd maybe send a quick email just to check.  Unless they have something else going on like moving into a new house, etc that they would be waiting. But yes, I'd be worried if it was lost as well.

  • I would give it a little more time. I'm terrible about cashing checks and there are times when I hold them for months before cashing them.

  • There is a school of thought that you shouldn't cash the checks until the thank you notes go out so if you haven't received a thank you note yet, I'd give it a couple more weeks and then follow up.
  • I'd give just a little more time, say a couple weeks.  I almost never deposit a check until I have done the TY note...I got those done around a month after the wedding.

Good thing I didn't know that when I got married- we cashed the checks 2 days after the wedding so we'd have money for the honeymoon lol.  I was definitely pushing the etiquette by sending my thank you notes 2-3 months after the wedding.

    Thanks for the tip.

  • Did you write it out to "mr and mrs MarriedLastName?" We got a lot of checks with my married name on them and I had to wait for my social security card to arrive and legally update my name with the bank before they accepted my signature to cash the check, so it took about 3wks. We learned to either give cash or just put it in the groom's name.

Just give them a reminder that banks typically won't cash checks that are older than 90 days old.
