I can't sleep right now anyway so I figured I would type out my birth story,.
Monday I went to the doctor because my swelling was hurting to touch. They did blood work, checked urine and BP. My BP was high but no other signs of pre-e. They told me to take a couple days off of work to see what my BP did. I had an appoitment for today (Thursday) for a growth/position ultrasound and was told to just come to the appointment and we would decide what to do from there. Well, I guess baby had something else in mind.
3am Thursday morning I was woken up by a large gush of water, I am talking about full on what you in see in the movie's style water breaking. I ran to the bathroom (while still gushing) and sat on the toliet for a good 5 minutes before I felt like I could get up. While sitting there I called the doctor (and my mom) and they told me to head on in the L&D. I tried putting on a pad to get me by until I get to the hospital, needless to say I went through 2 before we got out of the house and had to stop at the bathroom once inside the hospital.
We get checked in and the get me in a room. The nurse checked my cervix and I was dilated to 3. Keep in mind I had not really felt contractions to this point. I had told her that I was suppose to go today for an ultrasound to check position so she felt around my belly and decided baby was head down. Not soon after did the contractions start up, they weren't too bad but definately were getting worse. At the shift change at 7am I was checked again and they nurse said I was between 4&5 and that she could feel a hand over her "head". They asked the doctor about it and she didn't seem concerned.
A couple hours later the doc came by to check me and she said there was no change in the dialation and she could feel the hand. The doc decided to go ahead and do a sonogram to make sure she was head down. Well, unfortunately she was butt down and her hand was on her butt. This automatically meant c-section for me because of my heart shaped uterus (bicornuate uterus).
Well, I spent some time crying about it because that was the last thing I wanted, but I knew it was what was best for baby and I. At this point I was also getting really mad everything I had a contraction, because now I am in pain for no reason. So, the anesthesiologist came and and gave me the overview, the nurse prepped me for surgery and then off I was. I get to the OR and they do my spinal, which is the point I started to cry again out of fear, nervousness, and disappointment. I am so glad the my nurse and doc were so wonderful and understanding. After I was all numb and such they let my husband and mom in the room (my mother is a nurse and my doc knows her so she made an exception to let her in there). Next thing I know I can hear my baby cry before she even got her head out. It was the most beautiful thing.
Baby looked great, they got her all cleaned up and gave her an apgar of 9. The only thing wrong is that she some how ended up with a deviated septem. They said the pedicatrician will make the decision on what to do about it, but that it happens all the time and she shouldn't have any issues (medically or cosmetically) from it. I felt so bad for her because they had her laying under the warmer all by her herself until she got to a certain temp before anyone could hold her.
Well she finally got to the right temp and by this time I was all stiched up and transferred to my bed. They hand my little baby girl to me to hold while on the way back to the room. It was very frustrating to have to hold her while laying down, I couldn't see her face very well. I had to continue to lay down for a while because my BP was kind of low.
We get back to the room and we tried breastfeeding while I still laying down. This was very akward and she did not want to latch on for me. We waited a little bit until my BP got better and then they sat me up a little bit and she latched right on and fed for 20 minutes. She has been a trooper ever since with breastfeeding.
Her name is Brook Elizabeth, she was born May 19, 2011 at 10:30am weighing in at 7lbs 2oz (a lot less than everyone thought she was be, proved them wrong) and 20.5 inches long. She is so beautiful and I am so happy to have her in our lives.
