breastfeeding pain question

Background - after a marathon nursing session overnight Monday, I was sore on Tuesday.  Since Tuesday night it has been excruciating when E latces and nurses on that side.

I think I have a bleeb (milk blister) & blocked duct right behind the nipple (there is a hard pea sized lump right behind the nipple.) The only (slight) relief I have found was manual expression during a hot shower this morning, but it got worse again throughout the day.  Sadly I can't stay in the shower all day....

Anyone have any other tips or suggestions?  thanks.

Re: breastfeeding pain question

  • When I've had milk blisters and clogged ducts, I just hand express about a zillion times a day.  Like every time I go into the bathroom, I just would try to get milk to go through that clogged area.   My friend also has a good hack - she soaks a diaper and then microwaves it for a bit so it's hot - I suppose you could also just soak it with hot water - and then uses that as a hot compress on her boob.  I've used a regular heating pad too.  Keep at it so you don't get mastitis!

  • Hot compress?  That helped my blocked duct.  I have a rice bag that I warmed in the microwave. GL

  • The best way to get rid of a clogged duct is to have baby nurse with their chin pointed towards the duct. Get some lanolin for the soreness, that stuff was my best friend while nursing! GL!

  • I never had a milk blister, but I have had my share of clogged ducts and mastitis. Hot compresses are good. I have a rice bag too. Though painful do not stop nursing. I have another suggestion that may seem bizarre but it helped me. Cabbage leaves. Yes, I said it. Take a leaf and put it in your bra and when it gets warm and wilted replace it. You may think you smell like cabbage soup, but you don't. It softens the lump or takes down the inflammation. Honestly, I didn't care how it worked. All I know is that it helped me.

    Hang in there,

  • First of all I'm sorry! I've only ever had a milk blister and it was the freaking worst! Whatever you do just keep nursing even though it hurts. Kelly Mom suggest using an Epsom salt soak and warm moist heat. Hope that helps!
