Thermometer .. ?

I am thinking of investing of a decent either ear or temporal thermometer but there are so many out there and I don't know what is good and what's not.  So if you have one, what kind do you have and does it work well??

Right now we just have the Safety 1st thermometer with several different attachments (oral/rectal/underarm etc) but Hudson was burning up yesterday and the underarm one didn't even detect a fever ..rectal seems to work fine, but he's getting too old for that ....

Re: Thermometer .. ?

  • We have a temoral that I picked up at Costco, love it, and it seems to be right on temp wise.  When W was burning up (101) I double checked with our rectal and they matched, and it was the same when we saw the doc.

This is the one we have, I think it was about the same price in store.

  • yup. love it.

And for us, what I want to know is: little bit warm, or fear of a seizure (Gabe has a seizure when temps spike) and do I need to start cooling the kid down in a tub, motrin etc.  I like that its instant and I can do it when i sick kid or two is lying on the couch or even asleep...   really, all a dr wants to know is : low grade, moderate (give tylenol) or approaching dangerous....

  • We have both and I prefer the ear one. Ours is a Braun. The temporal one seems more variable probably due to operator error since everyone else likes it. But I have tested the ear one vs rectal a lot and it's always dead on so I trust it.

I hear ya .. Hudson hasn't ever had a seizure due to a fever, but he gets really shaky when his temp is high (like 102+) which makes me nervous thinking he may go into a seizure ..(I see it all the time at work too which is probably a big part of why I worry about it).  His temp was over 104 rectally this morning and he was soo shaky and out of it, poor guy :( Sick kids are no fun ..

  • We have the exergen one that the pp's posted.  I actually just got a 50% off coupon for it from bru if you want me to forward it to ya!    It works really well as long as Holden isnt too sweaty...
