Beco vs. Ergo?

I've looked at both brands and like features of both.  DH and I both don't have the greatest backs and I think these are our best options (unless you have another suggestion).  That said, which would you recommend, both brand and style?  We also have a Moby wrap that I will use, but I suspect DH will only use the more structured carrier.  Thanks!

Re: Beco vs. Ergo?

  • I love my Beco Gemini. I tried the Ergo but it was not a good fit for me since I am not very tall. DH can also use the Gemini but don't because I bought a 'girly' color. I agree that this is great for our backs, but I just used my wrap (a Storckenweiche) today and that is actually the very best thing for backs, especially when the baby gets a bit bigger (DD is 20 pounds).

  • I love love my ergo carrier. Madison is probably around 23-24 lbs and I still am able to front carry her with it. Its fast and easy to put on when I'm in a hurry to get out the door or to run errands. You can also back carry with it, and they have an infant insert you can buy for small babies. Madison was not happy in the ergo til she was 4 months old because I never bought the infant insert (now she practically lives in it). Before that, I carried her in a Moby, which was great for my back and wonderful for younger babies. Moby's stretch too much though once they get past 14 or so lbs.

With that said, I also own two woven wraps (more meant for older babies) - a Storckenweiche and a BBslen. I'm not sold on my Storck yet because the fabric seems thick to me and its a little short (though you can buy longer than mine), but I do love my BBslen because of how long it is and lightweight it feels. I plan on using it for mainly for back carriers, but you can use it for front carries too. Hope this helps!

  • I have a Beco that love. I don't really carry him anymore since he is so mobile but in a pinch I haul his 30 lb self around with ease.

  • Thanks for the responses, ladies.  I am 5'3" ish with a short torso.  Do you think I would be too short for the Ergos?  If you like the Beco, which one do you have (Gemini or Butterfly 2)?

  • I'm 5'3" too, fairly short torso, so you might have the same problem with the Ergo. It simply sat too low on my hips. The Beco Gemini sits really well on me. I suggest you try them out if you are in doubt though.

  • I don't have a baby to carry yet, but I have been investigating these two carriers also.  I am 5'2" at best.  After trying both of them on (sans baby, which I know could make a big difference), I like the Ergo much better.   The beco just was not as comfortable.  I also loved the infant insert for the Ergo....which I think gets mixed reviews....but I really like it.  Hopefully I don't sound too crazy for posting this, even though I haven't tried it with a real baby yet!  I'm going to try to borrow my nephew to try these out again!

  • Wearing baby outward is actually very bad for their back and spine (just google it), so its probably a good thing it didn't come with that feature. Have you looked into trying mei tai's? They may be a good option for you too. I like the look of them and almost bought one. However, I already had the Ergo so I decided against it.

I have the butterfly 2 and I LOVE it. I wear, Husband wears it, Baz loves it. I like that it has the panel inside so that Baz is essentially in a little pocket. It's like a sweat barrier in the heat AND it makes it a cinch to get him onto my back.

I also like how crisp the Beco looks. The Ergo just looks lumpy to me and I'm not a fan of any of the colorways. But I'm particular about things like that.

ps - we use it when we go hiking - it's far superior to a frame carrier. The same would be true of the ergo, which doesn't help you, but which is nice to know.

    Good luck!
