Help. On antiobiotics and have to EP for one week

Do you all have some tips for maintaining a strong milk supply while pumping? I'm going to call my lactation consultant tomorrow but you guys always have good suggestions. Here's the deal - Late last week I was diagnosed with a bladder infection. I probably developed it in the hospital but I didn't really notice anything until Baby L was about 10 days hold. By that time I was sporting a 103 degree fever and was vomiting and having severe stomach and lower back pain. I've been miserable and DH has had to take a lot of the slack, which he's been great about, but he has to go back to work tomorrow and I have to be able to function. Anyway , my doctor put me on an antibiotic that's safe to use when nursing but it's not working and she's changed my prescription to a stronger antibiotic that's not recommended for use during BF. I have to take it for 7 days. I'm very disappointed but I'm going to continue pumping in the hopes that she'll go back to nursing after. I have had no problems with supply so far.

  • So sorry you got sick. While I can't comment on increasing supply, just wanted to say that I did supplement and had no trouble with nipple confusion. DS went from boob to bottle and back with no issues.

  • I have heard that Fenugreek supplements can increase supply.  I haven't actually BF yet, so I have no idea if this works.  Good luck!

  • i've always heard the pump is not as effective as nursing, but i'd imagine pumping more often might help keep your supply up? also i've heard oatmeal works well.

that stinks, though. i'm sorry you had to deal with being so sick right off the bat!

  • That stinks!  I'm sorry you are feeling so badly.  Is it for sure that you can't nurse or just not advised?  Definitely run it by your LC.  I know in the past, when I've had meds questions, my LC would call some place (specializes in meds and nursing) to ask if she didn't know the answer herself.  Also check out Dr. Hale's website to see if anything is posted about it.  Kellymom is also a FANTASTIC BFing resource.  I'm sure someone on the forums can help you.

As for keeping up your supply...I've never pumped exclusively, but I nursed DD #1 for 17 months and I'm on month 6 with DD #2.  I pump at work - 10+ months for DD #1 and 2 months so far with DD #2.  Here are some things that work for me when I see supply dips:

    - pump at least every three hours, but every two is better, around the clock.  The more milk you remove from your breast, the more milk you will make.  Breasts are like factories, not warehouses - the more your take out, the more you will make.

    - steel cut oatmeal every day for breakfast (this is my normal breakfast).

    - staying hydrated.

    - eat enough/get enough calories.

    - lactation cookies (google a recipe).

    - brewer's yeast every day (this I do on a regular basis for the nutrients, even when I'm not having a supply dip).

    - sleep, sleep and more sleep.  Even if I'm going to bed at 8 pm. Stress/lack of sleep can wreak havoc on my supply.

    - power pumping.  This is pumping for hour at ten minutes on, ten minutes off.  It simulates a cluster feed.  I do this every other day till my supply is back.

    - fenugreek and blessed thistle combo. kellymom.com has dosing recommendations. I start this if I notice after a day or two my supply isn't coming back up.

    - I do breast massage when I pump.  This allows me to yield more milk, thus I make more milk.

Some other thoughts - you should really take a probitoc while you are taking the antibiotics and for two weeks after you are done.  This will help ward off thrush.  Probiotics are perfectly safe for your bebe.  kellymom also has dosing info.  Will you be all alone or will you be able to get some help during the day?  I know that Eping can be really hard when you are alone and have to pump and take care of/feed the baby.  I'm sure some EPers will chime in with tips on that.  I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure I will think of more things.  If I do, I'll post.  Good luck and hang in there.

  • Pump every three hours at least, two hours is better (though hard to do if you are taking care of LO yourself, depending on how fussy LO is).  I think you'll keep your supply up no problem.  And if the supply dips, pp has great suggestions.

  • you already got great suggestions, esp. from 2VTHokies, I think you'll be able to keep your supply up. Just double-check on how long you need to pump and dump, if you are taking the meds for 7 days, it may take another 2-3 days for them to clear out of your system.
