3rd Trimester

hit in the stomach at 38wks

So I was trying to get the plug out of my stability ball to blow it up with more air and my hand slipped off the plug and I essentially "punched" myself in the upper abdomen (right below my ribs).

I have felt LO move since then and I didn't hit myself hard enough for there to be a bruise or anything but I am still worried. I already called my MW's office (am waiting to hear back from a nurse). Has something similar happened to anyone?

I just feel so stupid/guilty and like I hurt LO.

Re: hit in the stomach at 38wks

  • you're probably fine

if you've felt lo move, and you didn't cause contractions or anything it's not a big deal

they've got lots of protection through your skin, your fat, your uterus, the amniotic fluid etc...

i've got a 2yr old dd who has no concept that there's a baby in there and she throws herself onto my tummy from time to time. i've ran into things with my bump etc, and no issues

i'd be more worried about a fall

  • What I know is that the placenta is what the docs will be worried about. My toddler kicks me alot, but when I was in a car accident they admitted me for three days because I hit my belly against the steering wheel. It's a good thing you called the MW. Good luck :)
  • I have a 20 month old who leans into my upper stomach all the time...soo fun because it causes an instant contraction.  He also has developed a habbit of kicking at my belly.  Deffinatly working on getting him to stop that one.

So far baby is just fine.

  • thanks ladies! the nurse called back after she talked to one of the OBs and said all should be fine...just to call back if I notice LO isn't moving, i have bleeding, my water breaks, etc. I honestly don't think I was hit hard enough for any of that to happen, but it made me feel better to call and post! BTW LO has been moving normally so I'm sure all is fine.

The guilt is probably worse than the actual hit to the stomach.

I fell a few weeks ago...hard enough to fracture my elbow, and my MW said as long as I wasn't bleeding, leaking fluid, or contracting, then it wasn't necessary to come in. I too, was feeling the baby move after my fall. Good luck!
  • I'm sure you are fine, but call your MW if you need reassurance. I was working in the hospital as an RN when I was pregnant with DD and got hit by an Alzheimers patient in my belly hard enough to leave a big bruise around 37 weeks. My OB said as long as I was feeling baby move and wasn't bleeding I was ok. She offered to keep me overnight in L&D for observation if it would make me feel better but I declined - DD came a few days later but I had already been dilated to 5cm so it wasn't related to the incident.
  • Yes, I got hit in the stomach by a student at school.  They said that LO is so cushioned in the amniotic sac that they'll be just fine.

  • So funny - I was doing the same thing today (with the stability ball) and waiting for this to happen! That being said, with my first pregnancy, at about 28 weeks my next door neighbor's dog broke into our back yard and I was grilling in MY YARD when this beast came charging at me and jumped right up on my stomach (as my neighbor watched the entire thing unfold as if it was totally acceptable - she and her irresponsible animal husbandry is a whole 'nother board topic!!).  At around 36 weeks with my first pregnancy, I was sitting at a traffic light when some douchebag decided to rear end me!!  I was so pissed.  Anyway - both incidents my little girl is a very healthy, albeit very bossy and in charge, almost three year old.  If you feel like LO's movements are slowing or you have any cramping or anything I would call.

  • As long as you have felt LO and they are still active you should be ok. My mom fell with me when she was 9 months pregnant right on her belly and I'm here :) just keep an eye on LO's movements would be my only advice...
