Stay at Home Moms

well I had my nuchal scan today...

well it went OK, I guess. I don't really know what to make of it.

The baby didn't cooperate at all. It stayed head down- like if you were in bed laying on your stomach- and wouldn't move no matter how much I got up and danced around, etc.

The tech was finally  able to get a picture of the nuchal area behind the neck and said "it looks good- its thin, which is what we like to see" But since the baby wasn't cooperating she couldn't get as many images as she would have liked.

She left to ask the dr if the image she got was enough for the test. The dr said yes- then they compared my bloodwork with the u/s.

The dr came it to go over it. The risk for everything went down and is "within normal range" but she said it's in a "intermediate risk". She said if I want, I can go get an additional blood test at 15 weeks.

The dr said that I have low PaPA- which I had with my son- and she said that could be playing a part in the results.

She also said that this 15 week blood test is new and had I gotten this result a year and a half ago they wouldn't even have offered it to me.

So long story short, my risk is 'within range' (1 in 532)- and its exactly where it should be for my age. But they are giving me the option to take this additional blood test. Anyone have any experience with this?

I'm nervous, because last time I was pregnant my results were that of a 20 yr old- now I'm looking at results for a 32 yr old (which is my age), I know , I know I shouldn't compare pregnancies. But in the back of my mind I keep thinking "everything is within range" Thanks!

  • Clay came back 1:5 for Edward's after my nucheal, so from my perspective, 1:532 is pretty darn good. I think knowledge is a very powerful thing, so I personally would never decline a non-invasive follow-up test. Are you on the fence about it for some reason? Or just worried because your results aren't as encouraging as last time?

  • I just wish the results were better, that's all.

I'm so glad everything turned out so well for your son- how did you function after getting that result?!

It was a tough time. We had to wait two weeks to get an amnio, and another week to get the results back. Very stressful.

Try not to worry too much. Your numbers mean that the chance of something being wrong is less than 0.2%. Those are some pretty awesome odds.

  • thanks! You are right. Less than 1% is pretty damn good.
