How do you do co-sleeping?

I've seen a couple posts talking about it but never considered it since Sebastian's room is literally 6 feet from my bed. Last night I fed him at 2:15 and then put him down at 3. I always keep him upright for a while because he tends to spit up if I lay him down too fast. Well at 3:15, I heard a loud unhappy scream and went into his room and he had spit up all over the mattress and soaked the pad. I think I got up too fast and I got really dizzy and couldn't get my balance back.

I managed to pick him up and change him/clean him up but the dizziness was getting to me and i was afraid to go downstairs. DH has bad allergies and was knocked out on benadryl. I swaddled LO and laid him beside me in bed and he slept peacefully the entire night. I didn't. I laid there and watched him to make sure he was still breathing and that neither DH or I would roll on him.

Re: How do you do co-sleeping?

  • I only do it in the morning, after his early morning feed. DH is usually out of bed for work by then, and I sleep lighter. I don't feel comfortable doing it in the middle of the night with DH in bed too. If LO is really fussy in the middle of the night, I will lay a soft blanket on the floor and we fall asleep together there.

  • And I sleep on my side- facing him. I know there i no way I'd roll over on to my tummy and onto him. If anything, I'd roll onto my back away from him.

  • The safest way to bedshare is for LO to sleep on the outside of the bed between you and a guard rail (you can find soft mesh ones that are easy to install). Mothers have natural instincts in their sleep to know where baby is but fathers do not, so it is never recommended for baby to sleep in the middle of the bed between mom and dad. When LO is in bed with me, I sleep on my side facing her and am always aware of her.

  • He either sleeps on my chest or we sleep tummy to tummy. If SO is in the bed with us while, I kind of curl around DS and form a "bubble" with my knees WAAAAAY out, so if SO rolls over towards us he ends up with a knee in the 'nads. Is it mean? Probably. But I know he'll never squish DS!

This exactly. Though last night BF slept on the couch because I got DS to finally fall asleep on his tummy, so I couldn't make my little bubble...

  • thanks everyone! i slept on my side and kinda did that bubble-just didn't sleep much. I was mostly worried DH who od'ed on benadryl might roll over on him.

  • I strained my back by lifting DS in and out of the PNP all night. So last night I put him in our bed to prevent more back injury. Nursing laying down is awesome! I don't have to completely wake up when nursing and DS is super content. I put him in a sleep sack and wore extra clothes so that neither of us needed a blanket. Hubby sleeps in the other room when baby sleeps in our bed.
